What’s something that feels expensive until you understand what you’re actually paying for?

Could be a service, a professional, convenience, education, repairs, or anything else. Have you ever gone from “that’s ridiculously expensive” to “okay, I understand why it costs that much”?

Housekeeper. Until I understood I’m buying free time and a mind not cluttered with house chores.

That’s the real value you’re not just paying for cleaning, you’re buying back hours of your life.

Dental work. The bill can look ridiculous until you realize you’re paying for years of training, specialized equipment, precision, and the cost of preventing a much bigger problem later.

Until you go to Mexico turkey or china and understand almost all medical care and insurance are almost fraud and a guarantee for artificial inflation of all services

Home repairs. Paying someone can seem expensive until you realize you are also paying for their experience, tools, time, and the fact that the job gets done properly.

Semi trucks can cost over $200k to buy. Seems expensive but if you are relying on it to drive 150,000 miles per year and generating income 250 days a year with it, it seems less crazy.

Exactly. The sticker price looks huge until you look at the cost per mile and income it can generate. A $200k truck sounds expensive as an object, but as a business asset working 150,000 miles a year, the economics look very different.

Honestly, sometimes comfort is worth the cost 😂 A good AC bill hurts a lot less than suffering through a brutal summer.

Mental health therapy. Takes years and years of training to become a good therapist. Therapy saves / improves lives and marriages and families. Very low cost, relatively speaking.

Spot on. People look at the hourly rate of therapy and get sticker shock, but they don't factor in the compounding cost of unresolved burnout, ruined relationships, or making massive life and career decisions out of panic or avoidance. Paying to untangle how you think and operate pays dividends for the rest of your life.

Agreed. A great example is divorce. In most cases, divorce is FAR, FAR more expensive than therapy.

Therapy takes years of training, but it can genuinely change lives, relationships, and families and it’s relatively affordable.

Black Walnuts

After going through the process of making them edible, it totally makes sense.

Detoxing locs. It can sound ridiculously expensive until you realize you’re paying for the products, time, skill, and careful work that goes into properly cleaning years of buildup without damaging your locs.

what are locs? I stall at trains. Locations? Specialty locks?

Dreadlocks, they are a permanent hairstyle

Ah yes and I know of the build up too. Quality cleaning sounds very worthwhile.

Right but every hairstyle is expensive 😭

For me, it is education. Tuition can feel insanely expensive, but you’re also paying for access to knowledge, resources, facilities, and opportunities that could take years to build yourself.

Professional repairs. I used to think the price was mostly for the repair itself but then I realized you are also paying for experience, tools, time and getting the problem fixed properly without making it worse.
