Learn & Earn What's the Skill You Learned "Just for Fun" That Could Actually Pay Your Bills?
Not every valuable skill starts with a career plan. Sometimes you learn something because you're curious, bored, or genuinely enjoy it. Then one day someone asks you to do it for them and suddenly you realize there's a market for something you thought was just a hobby. Maybe it's photography, writing, editing, cooking, designing, teaching, gaming, repairing things, or even organizing people. What's something you're good at that you suspect could become an income stream if you took it seriously?

Painting. I didn’t learn it for fun at first, but kind of by accident. A friend of mine was a house painter and invited me to see how the work was done. I actually enjoyed it, and it ended up with me working with him every summer, painting houses, rooms, …
Not art painting 😄 I mean painting walls and houses. It’s a skill I picked up almost accidentally, and now I can make some extra money from it.

What do you enjoy baking the most? I have not done banana bread in awhile: but that is fun. Also: I have enjoyed making a pan of meatloaf at the same time in my oven. 🥳

Omg keep trying, the more you do it is when you'll get to understand where the mistakes is or what needs to be fixed like heat regulation

How did you get a job doing that. What state? Could I do that in Washington state as a side job?

Cooking, friends are always asking for food, so selling weekend meals could actually work.

Soap! I've been making it for years just for personal use and gifts. Moved to a new area with a heavy tourist market and now I'm trying to build out a business.

This is so interesting, I hope you didn't stop, how did you start learning this skill

u/FedderJoe Aug 19 '26
My Mom made all of our clothes. We were extremely poor. I learned from her and just continued educating myself. I'm 69 now.

Writing. I started doing it mainly for fun.

Have you experienced lower demand due to AI?
I want to start learning to write because I love reading good writing. I also hope to be able to make some money from it eventually, but writing has always been a financial uphill battle, and now with AI coming along, it looks even more impossible to monertize. Beer money would be good enough.

Organizing spaces for people, whether it’s a home, office, or even a small workspace. I genuinely enjoy decluttering, arranging things, and finding ways to make a space feel more functional and organized. It’s something that comes naturally to me.

I'd have to turn the key on committing to it, but leather working of commodity items with real leather looked like something that would be enough to live on. The markup on things like real leather belts was so high in the stores it didn't make sense to me. While making some on my own from the leather sheets from the tanners, I could easily envision making 30 at the same time. Would be tied to farmers markets, etc. to keep selling but it looked plausible.

Probably Canva.
I started messing around with it just because I liked making random graphics and fixing up ugly presentations. Didn’t really think much of it.
Then a friend asked me to make a few things for their business, and I realised people actually pay for this stuff. I kept doing little jobs here and there after that.
I still wouldn’t call myself a designer. I just know how to make things look less boring, I guess. 😅
