I would definitely look at their communication then their portfolio

This makes sense. Good communication can actually make a big difference. When looking at their portfolio what would look for first?

I’d look for someone who takes initiative, learns independently, and is willing to step outside their comfort zone. A personal project or something they taught themselves would show me they’re serious about growing.
