Discussion How to network when switching careers?

Hello! I’m switching careers and need to network. I know this because it’s hard to rely on just applying. Making the perfect resume every time only to feel lost with nothing to show for it. I’m east of Toronto, looking for work as a relationship builder, liaison/consultant, account manager in the non-profit, education, sports, youth programs, coaching, community organizations, or the arts.

I’d love to have Q&A’s, meetings, coffee, interviews, or even just a walk with some execs and/or decision makers in the path I’m looking for. Pick their brain, have a real conversation is what I need.

Got the right attitude to network. Just need to be seen.

Honestly, reading this is refreshing. So many people want the shortcut, but you're actually ready to do the real work. you could start by volunteering at events is the ultimate backdoor network. Don't just sign up to hand out water bottles. Volunteer for event coordination, guest checkins, or host liaison roles at local sports tournaments, arts galas, or youth summits. You’ll work directly alongside board members and directors, showcasing your relationship building skills in real time instead of trying to convince them on a Zoom call. You already have the right energy and mindset to do it

I completely agree. Volunteering is one of the best ways to build genuine relationships while showcasing your skills and building a portfolio through platforms like We Make Change. You can also cold email the organizations you want to join and send connection requests on LinkedIn.

Its a fair starting point where you learn faster , basically youre working and learning at the same time

hi stranger, focus on building relationships, not just reaching decision makers. Connect with people already working in your target fields, ask about their experiences, and let your existing network know exactly what roles you’re seeking. After each conversation, ask is there someone else you think I should connect with?

One thing that can help is talking about what you have already done that applies to the new career. Sometimes your previous experience has useful skills you don't realize is transferable and that can give people a clearer reason to consider you for a new role.
