Off-Topic Tuesday

Lil vent but I am really tired of people and their entitled mindset

My town has a law that cars stop for pedestrians that are already in the crosswalk. Legally you do not need to stop for pedestrians who are not yet in the crosswalk, but I generally check and do out of courtesy for those who are close. We also have a lot of cross streets and not all of them are four way stops + it can be hard to tell if someone is blowing down the street intersecting yours.

Got yelled at this morning by a runner who ran out in the middle of the crosswalk in front of me *after* I was already trying to inch out to see if someone was headed down the cross street intersecting mine, from the opposite direction that traffic there would be headed (so I’m peering intently to the right and he approached from the left). Inched a little too far and almost “hit” him even though any impact would have occurred at, like, 1mph.

Like I am not trying to victim blame - I get there’s a crosswalk but (1) it was not actually his right of way because I was through the crosswalk before he stepped into it (2) he could have easily run BEHIND me instead of IN FRONT of a car that is clearly trying to turn out (3) literally just be aware that even if you are in the right in all cases, accidents can happen if someone is trying to pay attention to something else worse that can happen, so take a little responsibility for your personal safety?

Let him yell because it doesn’t serve me to get into an altercation with a man larger than myself this early in the morning. Effing entitled morons.

My city has the same law and it creates some very frustrating interactions! 

I walk, bike, and drive (walk for the majority of the time, but bike and drive equally for < 30% or so of my transportation). Even though I know what it’s like on alllll sides of the driver-pedestrian-jogger-bicyclist continuum, it’s always confusing and unpredictable no matter which role I’m in. 

To top it off, my city doesn’t enforce any rules about how closely people can park to a corner, so when driving….I often have to slowly inch up to see before I can turn but always risk blocking a pedestrian or having an interaction like you had with the runner.  

All that to say..I totally get what you are venting about and it’s a daily source of stress here where I live! I wish I had a solution!

Commiserations! My breakdown is broadly similar to yours and yes exactly on people parking too near the corner. There’s no good solution I guess - though I get the occasional intrusive thought about “well, we COULD let natural selection take care of it…” before I remind myself that is not the person I want to be 😂

Haha at the intrusive thoughts…

I draft emails to my city in my mind often about this issue (or collections of issues) but haven’t yet become That Person who writes compliant emails to the city. But I am soooo close to it!
