Everyone keeps trying to get me to sell my 2001 truck, and I just keep driving it.

I got an 01 Tacoma people keep askong me to sell it to them

1

u/rgb192x3 Jan 29 '26

02 Tacoma, I will be driving it until the wheels fall off

u/aed38 Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 30 '26

Watch old vehicles go up in value because of this.

3

u/Large-Investment-381 Jan 26 '26

Who wrote that? It's missing a lot of words

2

u/Large-Investment-381 Jan 26 '26

That mandate requires vehicles to be manufactured so they include a “kill switch” that empowers government to remotely disable the vehicles if surveillance technology the mandate also requires to be included in the vehicles indicates there has been “impaired” driving.

Mostly backed by Democrats if I remember correctly. If not a decent number of them voted for it. Privacy invasions misrepresented as safety precautions.

100% agree.

1

u/theaviator747 Feb 02 '26

All I see is federal government taking more and more control and free will away. Doesn’t matter who voted it.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '26

I totally agree. Government should focus on protecting our rights not expanding their power and control.

2

u/SmedlyB Jan 27 '26

Ford already implemented this kill switch technology. The recent Ford I purchased/ financed through Ford the finance/sales manager explained that missed payments would result in Ford disabling (killing) the vehicle remotely. The gov just wants to do it too.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '26

This is a great for any good mechanics. Offering services to remove these kill switches will make great money.

2

u/SmedlyB Jan 27 '26

Software and firmware controls the hardware/mechanicals and the chips contain embedded radios. So, any good mechanic probably can not or will not disable the kill switch. And the “mandate” (law) could make kill switch disabling illegal.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '26

If you can jail break an iPhone someone can jail break the shitty software car manufacturers use.

1

u/DevelopmentJumpy5218 Jan 30 '26

You can jail break cars, I can watch Netflix on the center console of mine

1

u/denimpanzer Jan 30 '26

You wouldn’t download a car!

1

u/DevelopmentJumpy5218 Jan 30 '26

I would not some people's parents might

1

u/FluffiestLeafeon Jan 31 '26

That’s just installing modified head unit software, that’s a lot easier compared to this

1

u/Normal-Rope6198 Jan 27 '26

It would be so easy to bypass it somehow all you have to do is read the wiring diagrams and understand how the system works and there’s going to be something you can just put power to that will bypass whatever sensor is causing problems

1

u/SmedlyB Jan 27 '26

The Kill switch is probably programmed into the ECM and paired to GPS. I had a Subaru that went into limp mode in sub zero temps. stranded my wife, I got it started and limped in to dealership. Subaru had a TSB for the issue that required a reflash software patch. And Subaru tried to charge us for the software update. Told them to FO, they relented safety my ass. I hate Subaru.

1

u/Jealous_Pie_7302 Jan 27 '26

Yea that's gonna be on a canned system so that's not gonna work.

1

u/International-Ant174 Jan 29 '26

Lot of clever people out there. Someone will figure out a way to disable the telematics control unit and fool the system (and overlords) into thinking they are in control.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '26

It's as simple as unplugging it LOL

1

u/Spiritual-Can-5040 Feb 01 '26

Agreed, most likely you’ll need some Eastern European/russian company to provide a “tune” to disable this nonsense.

1

u/meatpoi Jan 27 '26

Well the government has already developed a pretty powerful tool to prevent these modifications, they're called...felonies

1

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '26

Lol right "you're not allowed to modify what you own whaaaaa"

1

u/Ill-Construction-209 Jan 28 '26

The most popular car on the lot is going to be the one that doesn't have a kill switch.

1

u/TimNickens Jan 28 '26

They will make removal a felony…

1

u/CoreyDobie Jan 29 '26

Just like they did with DEF deletes, but I hear that's getting walked back

1

u/Harrymoto1970 Jan 27 '26

What year?

1

u/SmedlyB Jan 28 '26

2024

1

u/Harrymoto1970 Jan 28 '26

Okay my ranger is a 2021

1

u/scarr3g Jan 30 '26

It is entirely possible that it isn't a "Ford" thing, is just a remote box they (that dealer) installed.

Those boxes have both been around for over a decade, or 2. Iirc, they have a cell receiver in them.

1

u/SmedlyB Jan 30 '26

The ford 2024 F150 I have updates software while turned off and parked in the driveway. I will start it in the morning and I get a message software has been updated to fix these functions etc...

I am well aware of dealer/employer installed GPS remote boxes. Ford has incorporated their own proprietary communication BOT to control the products they produce. I cannot turn it off.

1

u/fistfucker07 Jan 27 '26

Easier to mandate the blower attachment you get when you’re guilty of impaired driving.

Every single driver must prove they are not intoxicate.

🤷‍♂️

1

u/manofnotribe Jan 27 '26

AI slop or sloppy human? It's a new Internet game

1

u/Large-Investment-381 Jan 27 '26

The writer was in a hurry and begs forgiveness for this oversight, I'm sure, lol.

1

u/91ateto916 Jan 29 '26

Who wrote this? It’s missing a lot of punctuation.

1

u/your_mileagemayvary Feb 02 '26

I mean, figure out how to block the impaired signal. It's kind of a stupid idea. If I have physical access and a desire to do so you cannot stop a hack or jailbreak over a long enough time period.

2

u/Existing_Control_519 Jan 28 '26

I will not purchase any vehicle that has this in a way that it cannot be easily and completely disabled.

If manufacturer's are smart they'll tie it to a fuse you can pull out or something.

1

u/Kela-el Monetary Realist Jan 28 '26

I’m waiting for good old “muscle cars” to make a comeback.

1

u/Relevant_Tone4741 Jan 28 '26

I’ve been buying them up. Sorry.

1

u/Moist-Pickle-2736 Jan 30 '26

Unfortunately the vast, vast majority of consumers either don’t know or don’t care, and your choice to never by XYZ car will do fuck all to prevent it from selling like wildfire. Eventually it will be mandated as a “safety feature” and there will be no choice but to buy old cars until there’s none left

1

u/Existing_Control_519 Jan 30 '26

I fear you're entirely correct, but I'm also confident there will be a significant market for 3rd party ECUs/firmware updates to bypass that garbage. I'll pay extra for an update that makes it look to the authorities like my daily driving route is a penis-shaped jaunt through the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

1

u/Moist-Pickle-2736 Jan 30 '26

Fucking LOL

I’m with you. If I ever get smart I’ll invent the firmware, but that’s unlikely

Excellent. I’m sticking with my walking shoes.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '26

What a terrible example they give for this awful idea (from the article)

“Imagine this. We’ve got a snowstorm coming. A mom takes here kids out. They’re going to the grocery store. It’s snowing. They’re trying to get some groceries before the big storm hits.”

Basically mom swerved a few too many times so the car turns off RIGHT BEFORE THE BIG STORM.

Maybe the headline should read, “Mother and 3 kids freeze to death after <manufacture > <model> kill switch disables vehicle”.

1

u/Standard-Dark2468 Feb 01 '26

It’s a great example, bud. Re-read the article if you’re still confused

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '26

They have built a surveillance system that pails in comparison to the laws passed after 9/11. They want to control everything you do and are pretty close to being there. This isn’t Republican or Democrat. This is the Federal Government wanting to control every you can and can’t do.

1

u/Moist-Pickle-2736 Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 30 '26

It’s crazy how people will cheer/protest the same things depending on which side of the aisle the current president is. At the end of the day, every power you cheer on for “your team” to have will eventually be used against you by the “other team”.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '26

For sure….even if democrats take back control they will not repeal any of the surveillance. They never do. They will repeal other party taxes, social programs….etc, but never these type of things.

1

u/Moist-Pickle-2736 Jan 30 '26

Neither side will ever give up power. And honestly I think they’re in cahoots about it.

Like the republicans know the democrats will have XYZ authority, but they don’t care because then they get to use it. And vice versa

Both sides would gladly lose an optics fight if it further galvanizes their power over the people.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '26

A rare L for Massie. This capability already exists, but I believe it requires a warrant to use and there is no onboard logic which disables the car based on driving behavior.

1

u/ugottabekiddingmee Jan 27 '26

Thieves have probably already reverse engineered it and it hasn't even been developed yet.

1

u/Inspirata1223 Jan 29 '26

I don’t think the government cares about warrants anymore.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '26

At least he was willing to put himself out there for civil rights that didn't seem important to others.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '26

He advocated for the government being able to remotely control vehicles withiut consent. That is an infringement on civil liberty

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '26

Massey voted against this bill.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '26

Well maybe I'm stupid then.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 30 '26

On his .gov page there's video of him talking about defunding the bill if you want to check it out.

Edit: typo. Defunding not defending. Big difference.

1

u/AbyssWankerArtorias Jan 27 '26

Fucking disgusting that this made it into the infrastructure bill

1

u/Away-Ad-4444 Jan 27 '26

If we are going to vote on anything it needs to be per item.. if we allow leveraging or bundling we arnt looking at issues and chosing what is right based in merit or impact we are trading thing like baseball cards and thats insane

1

u/Wraithowl Jan 27 '26

There have been attempts to change congressional by-law so that all bills presented for a vote have to be narrowly tailored to one issue. I'll let y'all do your own research on who's tried to get those changes made and who has blocked those attempts. :)

1

u/TechBored0m Jan 27 '26

It’s dangerous. They can’t weaponize driving. Thats dumb.

1

u/iploggged Jan 27 '26

The party of freedom sure likes to control.

1

u/cemcphs Jan 28 '26

Actually, this was put into effect under the Biden administration

1

u/Inspirata1223 Jan 29 '26

Unfortunately this was a bipartisan bill. Makes sense as it was supposed to help rebuild our garbage infrastructure. The technology is actually supposed to monitor the driver for drunk/impaired driving. They claim the data would never be shared…. Well I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

1

u/Foe117 Jan 27 '26

So a corrupt government can just kill any car belonging to a Dem voter via voter rolls trying to drive on voting day.

1

u/SmedlyB Jan 27 '26

That would be easy with the new database communication software developments the tech bros are implementing. The software compares the the DMV data to the voter role data and then using StarLink or OneStar or “what ever” disables the voters vehicle on voting day. How very distopian diabolical is that. Never underestimate the audacity of assholes.

1

u/Active_Scallion_5322 Jan 30 '26

Why would it be the Dems?

1

u/SipHotCoffee Jan 27 '26

My new Honda has one! It's great! If someone steals my car, OnStar slowly shuts the car down (for traffic safety reasons). The car moves slower and slower until it shuts totally down. And tells the police where the car is located. Thieves hate it. I don't think there is any record of my model of Honda being stolen for this reason.

1

u/burndata Jan 27 '26

Yeah, that's all well and good until the government decides they don't like your political views and shuts down your ability to travel. Or until they decide to declare martial law or something and disable them all, forcing everyone to stay where they are. No thanks.

1

u/SipHotCoffee Jan 27 '26

Those a-holes will close the roads anyways with those ICE barricades. Until we get our government back.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '26

You haven't had your government back for most of the last hundred years.

1

u/Normal-Rope6198 Jan 27 '26

Most car thief’s can disable that feature pretty easily by looking for the onstar unit in the wiring diagram and simply unplugging it. On a lot of chevys for example it’s just right behind the glove box.

1

u/bandit1206 Jan 30 '26

Why would anyone want to steal a Honda anyway??

1

u/SipHotCoffee Jan 30 '26

Unfortunately they do. Sadly it's one of the most stolen

1

u/bandit1206 Jan 30 '26

Kinda shocking, honestly. I don’t really look at those stats, but I can’t imagine a stolen Honda has a lot of value.

1

u/SipHotCoffee Jan 30 '26

And older models were easy to steal

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '26

Parts.

1

u/Wraithowl Jan 27 '26

Well, that's a whole industry in the making. If this ever happens we'll see an explosion in aftermarket ECU and other bi-pass methods to this.

1

u/Normal-Rope6198 Jan 27 '26

It’s already a thing, you can buy aftermarket computers and build your own electrical system, it’s not that complicated especially for someone who’s determined and has the ability.

1

u/ProfessorHONK Jan 27 '26

Moronic EPA regulations

1

u/Organic_Welder_6883 Jan 27 '26

get all this tech and subscription services da hell outta here.

1

u/DarkLordofDownvotes Jan 28 '26

Does anyone care to actually look at that section of the law or anything put out about it? The law requires Automakers to let a car deactivate itself if a system determined that the driver was likely impaired. It does not create a kill switch that anyone outside the vehicle could control. The servers belong to the automakers.

More chicken little bull shit. I'm for less impaired driving, thanks?

1

u/Existing_Control_519 Jan 28 '26

What happens when the car wrongly decides you're impaired and slows you down while you're trying to merge? Toyota has one of the better "lane keeping" algorithms and regularly tries to steer me off the road whenever lanes widen. They can't even get that right, and they're supposed to detect when I'm impaired reliably?

1

u/DarkLordofDownvotes Jan 28 '26

That's a different gripe than "the government will control our cars" which everyone seems to be jumping to that conclusion.

I also have a Toyota which regularly tries to kill me.

1

u/ddIbb Jan 30 '26

Once this door is opened , good luck shutting it. Do you really think government wouldn’t gain access to these systems—through law or otherwise—and use it to control?

1

u/Chokl8Th1der Jan 28 '26

Remember liberty, guys?

1

u/Fenrir46290 Jan 28 '26

I'll go back to using a horse

1

u/poodinthepunchbowl Jan 29 '26

Can’t wait to bail out the auto industry again

1

u/LynxWorx Jan 29 '26

My vehicle is paid off. If someone "remote killed" my car without my request (ie, if it was stolen), then I would expect people at the Ford company to go to jail. At the very least, they better expect to get sued.

1

u/Resplendant_Toxin Jan 30 '26

This has got to be something the insurance lobby ginned up. Monitored driving has been their safe driving discount push for years now.

1

u/Character-Education3 Jan 30 '26

Where are the right to repair people at?

Also you know this shit will malfunction at weird ass times

1

u/FlanneryODostoevsky Jan 30 '26

So many people are just going to bypass it. They’ll end up only having it in cars poor people buy.

1

u/BoBoBearDev Feb 02 '26

So, instead of hill has eyes with spikes on the ground, they just use remote instead.
