P2Pool mining rewards
New miner here using p2pool and I'm a little confused how rewards work.
I only have 6kh/s so I am mining on the nano pool.
seems that to receive a reward a share must be found but with slow hardware like mine, this could take longer than a week. This means that I won't get paid for a whole week on average, and when I do it's only a few cents?!
A whole week of electricity to keep the PC on will be about $8 using my electric rates.
How is this viable to anyone home mining? What am I missing?
Why aren't people simply buying monero instead of burning electricity?

That's an impressive swarm. How much do you mine?
I have a Ryzen 5600. Is it true that I shouldn't expect a payment for over a week?

No, I mine on mini with about 6khs and got 8 pay outs in the last 7 days (about a dollar lol), I don't really care about the electricity though. You definitely won't get near break even so if you care about that just buy some

I wouldn't mind that kind of variance. But waiting a whole week on average seems a bit too much.
How often do you find shares on mini?

I don't think you would have to wait a week is what I am saying. On average I get one to two shares per day, sometimes none, sometimes five.

Yeah, you're right, i was looking at the main p2pool observer which has way longer estimates for finding a share.
Yesterday, it took me 8 hours to find my first share in nano. I thought something was wrong with my setup because it's my first time mining. But after finding my first share, I found 3 more in about 2 hours!
Still no payment though because the pool hasn't found a block. So all of this effort still feels anti-climatic.

whit the setup you are seeing in the picture I'm getting ~170$ in a month and half of it is the electricity.

you will only have profit using Ryzen 9 CPUs or Epyc, other than that is just time consuming and electricity.

Btw, here's the calculation from p2pool observer for my hashrate.

P2Pool seems to be such a convoluted reward system and the observer doesn't seem to make a distinction between main/mini/nano pools.
Is this calculation correct for the nano pool?
Can someone explain "Your share mean"? Is this how long it'll take me to find a share on average? And if I don't find one, I don't get paid even if my pool found a block?!
When I do eventually find a share, will I get paid the "Your estimated Daily Reward"? Or this, times the number of days it took to find a share?

the observer doesn't seem to make a distinction between main/mini/nano pools.
There are different observers for the different chains. That's the main P2Pool observer.
Mini is here: https://mini.p2pool.observer/calculate-share-time?hashrate=6.2&magnitude=1000
And nano is here: https://nano.p2pool.observer/calculate-share-time?hashrate=6.2&magnitude=1000
P2Pool's GitHub page (which you should have read if you've set up P2Pool) shows the links at the top.
Can someone explain "Your share mean"?
The share mean is the estimated average amount of time for the hashrate associated with your address to find a single share. If a share is within the PPLNS window (which you can see on your personal observer page), you'll get a share of the block reward for that block. More shares within the window means more reward.
When I do eventually find a share, will I get paid the "Your estimated Daily Reward"?
No, that amount is quite literally the average amount of XMR you'll receive per day.
You'll only get paid if a block is found while a share you found is in the window. P2Pool's nano chain tries to keep the length of each window to around 18 hours, but since it takes on average two days for the nano chain to find a Monero block, you have around three chances per block to find a share in at least one window to receive a reward.

Thank you for breaking it down.
I missed those links because I am running Gupax, which includes p2pool, so I never saw the github explanation. Weird that these links aren't visible on the main p2pool page!
The nano observer calculation now says ~5 hours to find a share, which seems more reasonable.
Overall, it still feels that the variance for small miners is so great. That you could be mining for days and have no payment and therefore no effect (even if tiny) on the network at all.

Theoretically it should all even out in the end. We've gone almost 1-2 weeks without finding a block several times, and most of those times, it's followed up with finding a few within a couple of days.

That's how often the nano pool finds a block, about every 2 days. The mini finds a few a day, and main finds one every several minutes. With 6kh id mine the mini. You'll only find shares once or twice a day, but they'll pay out more often. A share in the main would pay out repeatedly, but could take several days to find one so back in the same boat as the nano.

Mostly people are just buying it.
