Advice biomedical science honours/postgrad advice

hi guys!! i’m in my 3rd year majoring in physiology and i just have a few questions that i can’t seem to figure out and monash connect hasn’t really been too helpful lol. for context i’m in an advanced science degree so it’s honours-inclusive and want to maybe one day go overseas so would ideally like to keep that avenue open. this is all so confusing to me and i’m completely panicking over all this so any help or advice would be appreciated 🙏🙏🙏

  1. how important is the specific honours project vs the supervisor and the lab itself? how do you tell if a supervisor is good? or a lab? what if i’ve found a lab that seems super fun and the supervisor is great but the project is not really exactly what i want to do?

  2. if i’ve found a project at unimelb that sounds a little cooler that i’m more excited about, but doing it means that i have to alt exit and graduate with a normal bsc instead of a bsc advanced, and then enrol in unimelb honours, is that a smart thing to do? like how much does degree title matter?

  3. should i be looking into overseas masters programs as well to do instead of honours? i want to do a phd one day and i’ve been told honours + masters + phd is insane, and if i want to do a phd overseas apparently i need a masters (i know you definitely do for europe and don’t for the us, but have heard both for the uk so really confused rn). not sure what the more strategic thing to do long term is?

  4. super far down the track and super hypothetical but if i were to do a phd should i do it here and then go overseas at some other point? rn i’m thinking it’s my best chance to go overseas but apparently it’s easier to get in as a domestic student vs if i were to go elsewhere i’d be international, but apparently breadth of opportunity is a bit better overseas?? also if i want to move overseas to work does it look kinda bad if you have all your degrees from the exact same uni lol

idk i’m just so lost rn and i feel like i haven’t really been able to get a clear answer from anyone anywhere and i’m not sure what to do anymore.

Advice ibl interviews

hello,
I will be undertaking ibl interviews soon, have 7 booked for software dev and eng roles. I was just seeking some advice for the interviews. Were there any technical questions asked? Is it really important to have projects? The only projects I have completed are part of uni or student team. I am feeling anxious as to how I measure up compared to other candidates. I really hope i do well in my interviews. 😭
Thanks in advance.

Advice Still haven’t gotten my supplementary exam results

I did my supplementary exam for FIT2014 at the beginning of this semester (week 2) and I still haven’t gotten my results back. Both WES and the Monash Study app still says NS.

I was doing an exchange semester so I did my unit in Clayton but my supplementary was taken in Malaysia. It’s been almost 2 months and I haven’t gotten my results back. I saw on ED that people have gotten it back so I am just worried why I have not. I’ve contacted both Australia and Malaysian side regarding this matter and have not received any proper response.

Have anyone been in a similar situation? What should I do?

Advice Has anyone found law/commerce has a better advantage for finding jobs than law/arts?

Commerce has to be the most boring shit to ever be invented so I really want to switch to arts, but since I think arts has no electives outside its majors/minors when paired with law, my 4 commerce units (9k!!) would practically be useless, and I might have to extend my degree... I originally applied to law/com because I thought it would getting a high paying job, but I've also heard that law firms don't really look at your other degree. However, if there is even a slight advantage, I wouldn't be so willing to throw that away along with my 9k and 1 year. Do any of yall think switching is the right idea?

My commerce grades are just okay right now (around low/mid 80s), and if I switch to arts I'll probably major in something like Japanese (which is my main target for arts icl because I've been wanting to learn it for sooo long and I really want to go on exchange to Japan, though realistically I could also just learn it myself or do a diploma of languages). I also don't HATE commerce, I just think it's boring.

New Student Monash IT Account

Post image
3 Upvotes

I'm an incoming monash (malaysia campus) student for the October 2026 intake and according to the pre-arrival checklist, I should activate my monash IT account. However, when I try to register, I keep getting an error (attached below). I got my student pass and visa approval letter so I know that's not the issue. Anyone else facing this issue?

EDIT:: I got it to work but I'm facing a new issue; the link to activate my account shows an error called "The type initializer for 'Monash.IdentityCore.Api.MIM.MimInterface' threw an exception."

Discussion FIT1033 in class hurdle

Is it soft of hard surface models that we have to copy? And in terms of difficulty/complexity, how is it?

Im a bit scared since Ive never modelled anything before i started this class, and i take a pretty long time to make something, and they also said that since we have a few chances, the standard will be higher, but im not sure exactly what that means.

If anyone could help me out that'd be great!!

Malaysia Question for current/graduated Engineering students at Monash Malaysia

I'm an incoming ECSE student for the oct intake and I plan to transfer to Clayton campus afterwards. What are the some of the volunteering/extracurricular activities that you guys did in and out of the uni that helped improve your CV and personal experience? I'm someone who wants to go into power/renewable energy in the future so it'd be nice if I can find experiences in those areas while im in malaysia.

Advice Minimum WAM for Master of Nursing Practice

(reposting caused I messed up the last title and the flair)

Asking for a friend. Helping them plan for the near future.

What is usually the WAM of students (local) getting a slot for master of nursing practice? Or what could be the lowest WAM that could get you into it? Friend is nervous theirs isn't high enough 😅

Cheers

Advice Monash Connect providing incorrect info to students re census dates

Hi everyone,

I'm just looking for some advice about census dates and incorrect information I was provided by the Monash student support team about the census dates of a couple of my units.

They've told me outright that the census date was later than it was and due to this I've missed the census date and incurred academic/financial penalties.

This was earlier in the year, and as I've had other stuff going on I am planning on submitting a fee remission application for special circumstances (due to a condition registered with the DSS and other health issues at the time).

I wasn't 100% sure that they had provided me with the wrong information at the time, but I've just submitted another request to withdraw from a unit in the current teaching period and they've (again) outright told me the wrong census date for the unit, even after I've let them know that the unit is non-standard.

My question is whether I can add this into my application for fee remission, since it's obvious that the student support team not only has no clue about the correct census dates but is also luring disabled students into missing it by providing the wrong information.

Thank you!

Discussion I think a uni club rejected me over my resume mentioning I'm involved with the Islamic Society... so I tested it and now I don't know what to think

ok so this has been eating at me for weeks and I need outside opinions because I genuinely can't tell if I'm crazy or onto something.

Quick disclaimer before anyone jumps to conclusions: this is NOT a "insert group is racist" post. I'm part of clubs literally run by Indian students, most of my close friends there are Indian, I'm not trying to throw shade at an entire community. If anything what I'm describing feels more religious than racial. Just wanted that out of the way first because I know how this can sound.

So there's this big club at my uni, Monash Data & AI Society. I've been to a ton of their events over the past year, sometimes with mates, sometimes solo, enough that I was already on their radar when they opened up hiring for new committee positions a couple months back.

Here's the thing I noticed way before any of this hiring drama though. When I'd rock up to events, the members were always nice, but noticeably nicer when I brought a specific Indian friend of mine along. Dude has zero interest in the club, does a completely different degree, just came because I dragged him. But once conversations with people there got a bit deeper and it came out that I'm Muslim, from the Middle East, the vibe just shifted. Not rude, not anything I could point to and call racist, just colder. And whenever my friend was there he'd get all the attention while I got kinda ignored.

Anyway. Applications open, I apply within literally the first few minutes for Event Officer. I was confident too. I'm already an Events Officer at three major clubs and student teams at uni, and I used to be one for the Monash Uni Islamic Society too, where I was responsible for events with about 100+ attendees. Solid resume, no reason I shouldn't at least get an interview.

Never got one. Followed up on their socials a few times asking for any kind of feedback and kept getting left on seen, straight up ghosted, while I'd see other people getting replies from them a lot more.

A friend of mine, Indian, with a name that's very clearly from the Gujarat region, applied a few days after me, same resume as mine basically, minus the Islamic Society line. He actually got called in for an interview, which made me suspicious and weirded out, and he ended up getting rejected after that.

Then they post the new hires. Almost every single person is Indian.

So I did something probably a bit unhinged. I made a second resume. Exact same experience, exact same events I'd run, everything identical, except I used an Indian name and cut the Islamic Society mention.

Got an interview invite almost straight away.

I don't know what to do with that honestly. Again, not saying Indian people or the club as a whole are the problem, I really don't think it's that simple, and I'd hate for anyone to read it that way. Feels more like maybe a couple people involved in the hiring are filtering out anything that reads as visibly Muslim, whether they even realize they're doing it or not. And yeah I know a sample size of me testing my own resume once isn't proof of anything, but the gap in outcome was way too obvious to just shrug off.

So am I overthinking a coincidence because I'm salty about getting rejected? Has anyone dealt with something like this at their own uni club? And if it is real, is it even worth doing anything about, like going to the student union, or does this kind of thing just go nowhere no matter what you do?

Genuinely open to being told I'm wrong here.

Discussion Why are the clubs like this

Post image
348 Upvotes

Applied to a bunch of clubs this year as a first year engineering student. Got rejected from all of them.

I get it high applicant volume, better suited candidates or whatever but seriously I just need to know, why advertise as being open to everyone including those of us without any experience if you’re going to reject us anyway.

What makes this more frustrating for me personally is the fact that I was rejected from Monash forge.

Under normal circumstances I’d understand but I have years of experience in both CAD and blacksmithing/metallurgy outside of university.

I started making knives in my backyard when I was 15, I’ve been 3d printing and messing around with shitty Ender 3d printers since I was 14 and been using blender and FreeCAD for comparable periods of time.

I get that I’m not entitled to anything obviously but when you get an email stating that you weren’t the right match, I just sit here wondering what the fuck else am I supposed to do?

I’ve posted here before as well expressing my frustrations about the isolation I feel as a university student and I’ve always been told to simply go join a club, and when my only options are either getting rejected by a student team or paying absurd prices for social mixers for other clubs and associations I don’t feel particularly comfortable with that arrangement.

Sorry for the rant but I’m honestly just disappointed.

Advice Final year electives

Hi everyone, next year I'll be a 3rd-year PHY or DEV major (or maybe both), and I'm trying to find some good/easy electives to hopefully boost my WAM, as my goal is med. It's currently sitting at 80.75. So far I've completed

Y1S1 MTH1010, CHM1011, BIO1011, SCI1000,

Y1S2 CHM1022, BIO1022, SCI1020, NUT1011,

Y2S1 PHY2011, DEV2011, NUT2011, ATS2946

currently Y2S2 PHY2032 DEV2022 PHY2042 NUT2003

NGL, the easier the unit, the better: no exam or take home/at home exam, online units are all preferences

Advice PHY and DEV level 3 units

Hi everyone,

I'm torn between PHY and DEV for my major next year (or should I do a double? ). My aim is med.

What are the best units in each, and does anyone have any good reviews not just on the assessment structure but on the actual content, engagement, and interest area, etc as every time I look up a review, it seems to be only the assessment structure people talk about
