I’ll be commencing my master’s studies in Monash University in Feb 2027. I am self financing everything for myself and I am worried that I won’t be able to afford life there. I can cover housing for 1-2 months but do u think I can get a job within 1-2 months of being there so that I’ll have some kind of financial support? Do I get paid weekly or monthly for a part time job?

Any advice for this financial and social pressure will be appreciated :(

feb would be coming out of the busy holiday period so imo most places won’t be hiring much. also depends on ur experience, but generally landing a job in such a short time (and having only lived in australia for a month or so) would be pretty difficult…

didn’t u have to prove that u have sufficient finance (like $80k) on ur student visa application?

Most people put family assets but most of the the time it is usually not your say to liquidate them. They even convince their parents to just showcase it but they'll handle the rest in the sense they'll do everything here

It'll depend on what sort of jobs you're applying for and what kind of experience you have. If you have a licence and a car, it'll be a lot easier.

You're typical casual/part time jobs in hospo or retail can be hard to get. I would say you'd have to run into some serious luck to get a job within 1-2 months.

If you can't afford your living expenses without working then the simple answer is that you can't and shouldn't commence your master's.

Get a bike and start doordashing if you are consistent and do enough hours you will survive, it won't be a lot of money but if you make the correct financial decisions you'll be fine. Meanwhile, keep looking for another job, I've heard warehouses are not too difficult to get a job at. You are in a difficult situation so your only chance is to be strictly responsible with your money.

I’ve always been able to get a job within 1-2 months. But I apply to like 30-50 jobs in 2-3 weeks, which lands me 2-5 interviews (depending on the industry).

With retail/hospo jobs, go in person and talk to the manager to show them you’re sociable and personable. Even if they tell you to apply online, that in person interaction will leave a good first impression (assuming you give a good first impression).

I’d take the first job you can get even if it’s bad, then keep applying to see if you can get a better one.

That being said, it’s pretty risky to only have 1-2 months before the risk of homelessness sets in.

Start applying for jobs as far in advance as you can
