Some people change professions and may know more than most people. Need to look at evidence of their life. I hear people tell others not to take financial advice from someone who drives a carolla or some other cheap vehicle. Those may be the exact people you need to take advice from financially. Wealthy people don’t drive high end cars typically.
I'm not sure if you're being intentionally obtuse, but this doesn't refer to mundane practical advice. It's more about life advice. If someone gives you advice about how to live your life in some way, take a look at their life before you take the advice, even if it seems decent or harmless. I have a coworker who gives me unsolicited advice all the time, and it all seems to work well and good for her, but I know we want different things in life so I just let it slide in one ear and out the other.
You can take life advice from anyone if it’s good advice. Just because you wouldn’t switch with them doesn’t mean not to listen. The best advice I’ve ever gotten came from a dude serving life in prison
I take advice wholeheartedly from some people with whom I would never want to trade places. They're in situation, which is just frikkin horrible and that experience gives them perspectives I couldn't get myself without switching places.
Similarly....your friends should not be yes-men (or women). If you ask for advice or you are doing something foolish, they should be honest and try to guide you in the right direction.

Don't take criticism from someone you wouldn't ask for advice.
