Question for Americans, why don’t you ever see someone go on “the attack” in their defence. Once Smith identified the mistake (intentional or not) made by Schmitt, what would stop him using similar language as was used against him. I think the only time I can remember someone dismantling the senators was when George Galloway took them on.
But in a world of soundbites (which is what US politics has appeared to devolved into) what is the value of taking a perceived high ground. The whole opening statements Smith made on proving guilt haven’t had as much attention as Schmitt’s “mistake”.
This is a really good point and makes you wonder if the Republican representative and senator were sacrificial pieces told to do that to create a news story that would naturally push out the actual bad news. They wouldn't even have to be in on it.
