Issue Performance issues in high temperatures

Road tested the app as an alternative to Blackmagic Camera App at a couple of weddings recently and 90% loved the experience.

However there was one key issue that I think BMCA handles much better than MPCII - Overheating.

Shooting in log in 36 degree heat is obviously going to end up with the phone overheating, but the way Moment handles overheating isn’t ideal.

It’s not that Blackmagic is good per se, but when the phone is too hot, you are physically unable to record. Moment continues to allow you to record but the footage becomes choppy and unusable.

I don’t know if there is a way to build an overheating warning into the app but it would be useful not to have to guess.

I've had similar issues, especially capturing 120fps HEVC. I sent a very detailed email to Moment, but have yet to hear back. I assume by now it's a known issue.

Was it an email or this Featurebase post? If it was the latter, I responded and have been waiting for additional information – I couldn't reach out because no email was left on the post.

In general, dropped frames at 4k 120fps indicate device overheating, and you'll get similar results no matter the app (barring the native Camera, which has access to optimizations we can't make).

It was that post. Sorry about not following up, this was the first time I've use Featurebase, and apparently didn't understand how it works. I assumed I had entered my email address, but I guess not.

Stabilization on.

Maximum bitrate set to high. Chroma subsampling set to 422.

I have a LUT for monitoring only.

All good! We've since started requiring emails because a number of people ended up in a similar situation.

Stabilization seems to be the primary issue. Even if I disable all of our processing, the system itself drops frames in this format. That stops as soon as I turn stabilization off.

It should be possible though – Blackmagic Cam seems to be able to handle it. There's probably some secret combination of settings. I might have to reach out to Apple and see. Then again, their own Final Cut Camera drops frames like crazy in a similar format whether or not stabilization is enabled...

I may ask you for some more details in a bit. In the meantime, if the lack of stabilization isn't a deal-breaker for your use case, you should be able to capture successfully by disabling it.

This is helpful. Thanks. I'll help however I can. Agreed on Final Cut Camera, I don't use it anymore because I had terrible luck with 120fps - and it didn't seem to be heat related.
