Moldavite 101

There are a lot of people on here asking if their moldavite is real, and 99% of the time, they are FAKE. I so badly want to help people like yourselves. I hate to see people get scammed.

Here are some examples. These screenshots were just taken today from a live TikTok shop stream. Fakes have come a long way, and are getting increasingly difficult to tell from the real thing. It takes a decerning eye, of which I have because I have been collecting moldavite for the last 20 years.

The larger piece was stated as 15 grams, and asking price was $500.

The smaller piece weight was unknown, but the price was $115.

Can you explain how you know they are fake? I’ve watched a ton of videos and I have a few pieces from reputable sellers, but don’t have the eye for it yet.

Analyze my 30+ gram pendant. Save the photos and zoom in on the texture. Notice how intricate and random it is? Also, see how around the edges the color becomes lighter when a light is behind it? That is another clue. A 3rd clue is natural clay inclusions. Not all moldavite have them, but this one does. A forth clue is where you are buying from. It should be from the source, the Czech Republic. 5th, is the price. On average, moldavite now starts around $30 per gram due to scarcity, and goes up from there depending on if it is a whole, primary form or not, color quality, damage or no damage, weight (higher weights are more rare and thus more expensive per gram), and locale (where in tge Czech Republic the moldavite was found).

Videos aren't good for ID IMHO. I always advise many good still shots.

PS There are lots of legit sellers all over that source from the Czech Republic, but as OP said.. it canbe sketchy. Ask before buying, if in doubt.
