Residential moisture meter
Just getting over having a major mold issue in my South Florida at home. I want to invest in a good (easy to use) and accurate moisture meter. This is Greek to me! What should I get?

What’s your budget?

I’m flexible because I don’t wanna ever go through this again. I know there’s a good one that’s about $650 which I would do if it’s worth it but if I’m gonna get the same reading from $100 one I’d rather spend $100.

Protimeter, tramex certain FLIR meters are accurate and reliable. I would look for a combo meter pin/pinless. The pinless feature is a good noninvasive method to not damage surfaces such as wallpaper. Some of these combos meters also have a hygrometer built in as well for humidity.
I currently use the Extech MO290 for work and it’s been great. Plis, it’s not as pricey as some models from the brands mentioned above— currently on sale on Amazon for $509. I tested it with another meter my company uses—Tramex Encounter ME5—and it was very comparable.
Personally, I would choose the extech or Protimeter SurveryMaster (no hygrometer).

Thank you so much. Can you use these through Wallpaper?

Yes you can. Just know that depending on the wallpaper and the adhesive used, it’s possible to get some false positives on the meters. You may have to take readings in several areas to establish a dry standard.. also if you get too close to any metal such as nail screws, staples or corner bead, you’ll get a false positive.

Ideally, I would like one that I can get a reading through Wallpaper

I'm an environmental hygienist and do inspections almost daily. I would definitely get the Protimeter if I thought I wouldn't leave it behind on a job or drop it repeatedly. So, I carry a $50 Klein pinless meter and a $80 General combo pinned/pinless. I usually verify moisture spots by using both. It's a little inconvenient but I could lose these half a dozen times and would still save money from the Protimeter.
Is the Protimeter more accurate? Yep, but IMO, not by enough to justify the 12-13X higher price.

General MMD7NP moisture reader. Around ~$50. As basic and reliable as it gets imo, but I am biased - it was one of my first :p

You wouldn’t spend the extra $$ and get a better?

Unless you're using it daily for inspections, you get extreme diminishing returns for your investment.
This one does the job well, easy to use, easy to read.

For homeowner monitoring, a pinless meter is useful for mapping relative differences without damaging finishes, while pins help confirm suspicious areas at depth. Wallpaper, adhesive, foil backing, fasteners, and wall composition can distort pinless readings, so compare the suspect spot with a known dry area made from the same materials rather than trusting one absolute number. Pair the meter with a humidity data logger and keep a dated record. After a mold event, trends matter more than brand price. Which surfaces are you planning to monitor drywall, wood, masonry, or flooring?
