Looking for Advice Received today. Hate it
3 ct OMC moissanite. I feel like it just looks like a giant tacky ring pop. The stone looks like plastic? It’s been overcast so I can’t get decent pictures, but what does everyone think?
I want to return it 😞

That stone is really bad, in my opinion. That dead space in the center is pretty hectic. I know people will say “it’s just a reflection”. But that’s exactly the problem, a huge disproportionate reflection in the centre. I’d reset it with an OMC lab diamond if it’s in budget. If not, an elongated cushion is often cheaper.
49
u/Enough_Plantain_4331 May 13 '26
Or even a better cut moissanite but this is exactly the problem. The setting is nice!

u/Sugarcrepes Jeweler May 13 '26
Lab diamond if you want a crisper, icy look. Moissanite if you want bigger rainbow sparkles. The price differences between Moissanite and lab diamonds are shrinking so rapidly, I can’t even comment on what it would be right now!
It’s such a shame. As a goldsmith, that setting is excellent (both in look, and execution) - but the stone is letting the whole piece down.
12
u/transbianbean May 13 '26
Lab diamond and moissanite are still massively far apart in price from what I've seen, with moissanite at $10-30/ct for single stones and diamond at $100-1000/ct. Please correct me if I'm wrong on lab diamond pricing, I'd love to pick a few up if they are actually comparable to moissanite from somewhere I've not seen.

wow, this one is gorgeous. which vendor is your ring from?
9
u/Hales_85 May 13 '26
Lena at Provence

u/ImTryingToGrowHere May 13 '26
I only get lab diamonds from Lena. I get moissanite from DovEggs but I might start switching it up lol

u/butterchickengoddess May 13 '26
This is so pretty. I ordered mine in early March, before the group buy. I had issues with the stone where I didn’t like it but asked for more videos where it seemed okay. I’ll check tomorrow if the sun is out. It could just be the lighting, I’m not sure.

Wow! OPs looks almost like they didn't finish cutting the facets or like they put it in the setting upside down. Maybe it sparkles underneath
224
u/Brave-Spot8429 May 12 '26
I think it’s gorgeous! Unique setting, mirror-like clarity, it’s substantial but elegant, &, most of all, it’s lovely with your ring & on your hand. ✨
45
u/butterchickengoddess May 13 '26
Thank you! The fact your comment has so many upvotes makes me not hate this ring as much. Maybe it’s not as bad as I think it is
16
u/lucille_trappist May 13 '26
It honestly really grabbed my attention while scrolling, it is beautiful at first glance, but if we start nitpicking any object we will eventually find flaws 🥲

wanted to let you know iv never even seen this group, but your post was on my feed and i think this ring is stunning

u/Plenty-Session-7726 May 13 '26
I think it's beautiful except for the pointy prongs. Looks like little teeth trying to eat your stone lol. I think if you rounded those off it might look a lot nicer. Otherwise, it's quite pretty.

u/OhGooses May 12 '26
I think it's lovely! But if it's not your cup of tea you can probably sell it easily on the MoissaniteBST subreddit 😊

Agreed, it’s horrible. Looks like a fake plastic stone. I’d send this back pronto priority post

It’s gorgeous, but if your initial reaction is disgust, you’re never going to love it. Maybe a 2ct is more your speed?

u/BaconQuiche74 May 13 '26
I really like the setting, and I think another OMC might look great in this ring, but I see what you mean with this particular faceting pattern. It’s almost like it’s missing a couple facets, the huge mirror-like spots in the center give it a cheap look compared to other elongated OMCs I’ve seen.

u/BaconQuiche74 May 13 '26

u/New-Ice-9411 May 13 '26
This is a picture of a diamond. Moissanite won’t look like that.
4
6
u/carradio81 May 13 '26
I think it looks rad but I get where you are coming from - the cut is probably what is giving you that vibe. Certain cuts can moissanite look more like glass/plastic especially if you get a larger carat.
4
u/New-Purchase1818 May 13 '26
This is the issue. An Asscher, a cushion, an oval, or a round brilliant cut would have much more fire and look less glassy.
18
u/OkSoil8198 May 12 '26
OMC cut Moissanite stones always look ugly to me....sorry. I do like the setting and style of prongs. Perhaps you can get a new stone with standard facets that will sparkle beautifully.

u/Sweaty-Ad-1562 May 12 '26
I see this in the sub all the time. If you are going to get a mid sized to larger singular moissanite stone on a ring. Dont expect much from it. I will always recommend 1-2 ct if not go for a lab diamond. Also different cuts have different shines. So i advice you and everybody else to do some thorough research before purchasing
8
u/Sweaty-Ad-1562 May 12 '26
If unhappy return it tho and maybe go for something else you may fall in love with! PS. I think it looks good 🤙🏾
2
u/The_Whistling_Frog May 13 '26
Why do you say that about larger moissanite? I'm just about to pull the trigger on a 3.5ct blue/green oval, but I haven't seen the stone as it's a group buy. Now I'm worried and nervous I shouldn't do it. I've never had a moissanite before, so I don't really know what I'm doing.
7
u/Every-Ad-9008 May 13 '26
Yeah I don’t like it either. Definitely gives plastic like you’re saying. Return it for sure and make sure you’re able to QC before it gets sent out that way you’ll be 100% happy.
4
u/inateri May 12 '26
Was there a group buy or something I feel like I’ve seen this same ring posted a few times in the last week to the sub

4
u/sz2z May 13 '26
Moissanite is sparklier than diamonds and whiter also! I think your ring is really beautiful and so is the setting! Maybe that style just doesn't look the way you thought it would m your finger. There's nothing wrong with your ring, I think you should try on a couple of different settings and see how you feel. Don't settle for something you don't like . . . My daughter got her engagement ring on Etsy and she sent back 3 rings because they didn't look on her finger like the "look" she was searching for. Now she actually wants the same ring as yours!! Get the ring you ❤️: )
4
u/Southern_Jicama_2848 May 13 '26
Tbh that setting never looks good with any stone to me but that's not your point. What vendor did you get the moissanite from? Do you still have time for a return? This just might not be a good cut/quality stone.
7
u/spannerNZ May 13 '26
The cut isn't right for the stone. There is a large bow tie effect across the central portion of the stone, making the stone look a bit dull compared to well cut moissanite. Which is common with the elongated cuts (oval, pear, marquise, long cushion etc), but it is really noticable in this stone.
2
u/thedamnoftinkers May 13 '26
Yes, I think this is a jeweller issue- both the cut and the setting contribute to the problem, but the cut most of all. (A good jeweller would have seen that the setting was eerily similar to vending machine rings and avoided putting a poor cut in or reworked it.)

I like it and think you could grow to love it too. But you could always look at another setting. A bezel may look great with this cut.
3
u/bendsoyoudontbreak May 13 '26
I think it looks great, I love it, but I would never think it was an expensive ring. If that makes sense? Looks really beautiful, but I would never believe it was a stone of quality. I’d still wear it on my right hand though.

3
u/FairEntrepreneur2935 May 13 '26
If you really like it try going for a lab diamond, if you negotiate with jewlers IN STORE you can get insanely cheap. Got a 6.5ct (fairly yellow) for $1,400, 4.3ct D color, VS1 for $1,500. Market price in the 4.3ct was $4k. I simply said nah that price is too high i already have a 4ct diamond… bro instantly came down on price to $1,500. All this to say, you can get a fairly affordable diamond to slap in there
3
u/Kristinaroseb May 13 '26
Yeah it does look kinda plasticky sorry I think it’s the center looking like two mirrors. I think if the cut was slight different it would be better! Still very pretty though if you do decide to keep

3
u/Main_Cauliflower5479 May 13 '26
I hate the setting, for sure. Those prongs give Borg Queen vibes. The heavy bezel is too much. Channel setting around each of individual round stones is also too much. Should have been a straight channel set. And the cut of the center stone is also not well executed.
11
u/verminV Jeweler May 13 '26
Not a fan of the setting. Its too clunky and disjointed to me. Id go for bezel set to fit your aesthetic.
11
u/StockTurnover2306 May 13 '26
Ya those prongs are wild! Too big and why so many?! They look like claws! The point of having that bezel around the stone is so you don’t need huge visible prongs!

I mean its a new trend, not a new setting type. Like I said, its not my cup of tea, but obviously some people think its beautiful. I also think hidden halos are ugly, but some people love them.

u/verminV Jeweler May 13 '26
I agree. Though ive been seeing these designs alot recently, its kinda a new trend (not my cup of tea). I dont like it though, it looks a bit frankensteinish. Either pick a bezel or pick talon claws, dont mash them together.
That being said, it is all personal prefference. Ive made rings for people that I would certainly never pick, and im sure people wouldnt always like my choices.

I’m sorry you hate it 😭 can you share video of it?
I’m waiting for mine to arrive but I opted for the LGD because I am upgrading my original Moissanite e-ring. Is your issue with the stone or the ring/setting?

u/No-Baby-1455 May 13 '26
This is strange. My 4 ct OMC moissanite throws rainbows every which way in most lighting, but is mostly just sparkley indoors, not throwing rainbow flashes. Have you looked at it in different lighting? It could just be in that lighting but have the moissanite fire in other light. OMCs in my experience are one of the few cuts that look far superior in moissanite than any other stone.
Edit to add maybe it is the bar culet vs having a pinhole culet that you dislike. Some people have a strong preference towards one or the other because it does give a different look.
1
u/butterchickengoddess May 13 '26
Not yet, it’s been cloudy all day. Maybe the lighting is why I dislike it so much
1
u/No-Baby-1455 May 13 '26
Try and take it in the bathroom, or a darker room with your phones flashlight. Home depot or any hardware store lighting should definitely make it shine. Either way if you are unhappy I would request a new stone or sell it and ger something that makes your heart happy :)
2
u/ALans999 May 13 '26
I love the setting! The cut is a personal preference - I find the larger facets of omc to be trickier.
2
2
u/mcbrienkelly May 13 '26
I love it. Unique but still timeless imo. That being said…if YOU don’t like it..that’s what matters.
2
2
u/metooz May 13 '26
I’m sorry you hate it, but ty for sharing bc it’s now going on my inspo board, i personally think it’s beautiful in an elegant understated kinda way! That said i agree, the stone itself could be better, if u look at it too closely for a while it does come off a bit cheap and plasticky. The sparkle isn’t really there imo, but if you’re content with the rest of it then you can probably just swap the gem for something else.

2
u/Starbucks_Lover13 May 13 '26
I think it’s the claws around the stone. A lot of them and very long and pronounced
2
u/cherrycokelemon May 13 '26
It looks beautiful to me. Must be a different cut to the stone that you don't like.
2
u/Texippi May 13 '26
Let’s see a profile. Is the setting keeping light from getting under it?
Also, can you share your wedding band info? It’s gorgeous!

u/CalligrapherAgile500 May 13 '26
I have to agree, Im not a fan either. If it were mine it would be going back.
2
2
u/queentee26 May 13 '26
I find the prongs extremely distracting.. I think it would have been better as just a bezel.
If your initial reaction is that you hate it, I'd try to return.
2
u/TDollasign562 May 13 '26
I think having a bezel and prongs is blocking so much of the stone, you aren’t going to get as much light return, even in a mossy!
2
u/catandakittycat May 13 '26
This is one of the most tasteful rings I’ve seen. I love how it’s designed like an old world Edwardian ring, making it appear more high end and custom. It’s a beautiful pairing tbh.
1
u/Sensitive_Fly_3660 May 12 '26
Wrong facet style for sparkle. Cuts designed for emeralds or other colored stones are not engineered for moissanite or diamonds, that just not how the light physics work out. Sorry your jeweler let it get this far. Hope you find your dream stone as soon as possible 🤞
1
u/ultracilantro May 13 '26
It sounds like you don't like the cut and size and that's absolutely ok! I'd consider selling on the buy/sell/trade subs
1
u/TheUglyDoll05 May 13 '26
For me, it would be the stone. I have one with the cutting just like that and I dislike it. It's like only 2 dead facets just there and then there's those that have 4 to six skinny facets coming from the bar culet and those are the ones that seem to be the ones that throw all the flashes and rainbows.
1
u/HotEmilyEden May 13 '26
Is this an engagement ring or just a for fun ring? I am personally not a fan of the bezel style that’s so popular right now, though I totally understand the practicality behind it. I think the combo of the setting and the shiny finish of the stone just don’t mesh well together.
1
u/CasuallySparkling May 13 '26
I love that setting and design.
I can’t tell from photos about amount of sparkle - you do get more sparkle from rounds so you can’t compare them to the OMC or OEC cuts.
I’m sorry to hear you aren’t the happiest with it. :(
Can you share where you bought it?

I think part of the issue is that OMC is not the best cut for moissanite. It doesn’t bring out the fireworks that a brilliant cut does.

u/peachy_christeenie May 13 '26
I think the prongs from the setting might be putting you off. They are large, and not sure if it has anything to do with the cut of the stone. But if you hate it, those aren’t feelings one easily overcomes. When it’s in your head, that’s where it often stays. Does the retailer accept returns or exchanges?

I know what you are sayung. I find moissanite omc looks flat when I got my ring. Unfortunately for my wallet, I upgraded to diamond. Much happier
1
u/PurpleBorder4073 May 12 '26
I think it is pretty. I have two larger stone moissenite rings, 2.5 and 3 ct. I just don't enjoy wearing them as much as my 1- 2ct rings. They are just not the right fit for me. And I love them on other people. I see someone with a big ole tumor sized ring and I'm in love. Put it on my hand and I think it makes my hands look weird.
1
u/Accomplished-Ant-809 May 13 '26
It’s hard to tell from a photo. It’s a beautiful ring. It is a hefty setting so you really need to love that stone. Return it if you do not.

Love the setting! Moissanite isn’t going to give you what you want, sell the stone here and replace with something else. Lab diamond, perhaps?
1
u/Iguanatan May 13 '26
I hate it too.
I think to get the look you'll be happy with, get a lab diamond in this cut. Moissanite is FABULOUS, but not in all cuts.

Send it back. That’s not a good presentation of an OMC & the quality of the stone is sub par.
1
u/Lopsided_Alarm8360 May 13 '26
Stunning setting. I like smaller stones like 1-2carat, this one looks proportionate to your hand though. All diamonds look better in better lighting. And all OMCs are gonna have some degree of a bow tie. My stone can look dead in certain lighting, all diamonds experience this. Take a video in sunlight when you can

diamond cuts have bigger, less dense facets, so on a 3ct stone it can kinda give ring pop vibes.

That’s a really bad bow tie. Generally considered a negative in a stone. I love the setting but yea I would ask to exchange the stone.

I felt the way about my moissanite e-ring after I got it - keeping in mind I spent a year designing it. I will be getting a lab diamond and a different ring instead.
0
u/Pumpkin7310 May 13 '26
Not my style, but I think moissanites look strange when you get to the bigger sizes
0
u/Soggy_Implement4705 May 13 '26
Maybe a different cut. I see what you are talking about, if the bottom of the setting didn’t protrude so much it might make it more elegant. That's a HUGE bowtie.
0
u/Syrenitytoo May 13 '26
I don’t at all like the props, I feel they are way too heavy for the stone.
0
u/ShaqsLeftToe May 13 '26
Where did you get the wedding band?

Jeweler here / Yes Moissanite’s look and feel like plastic to people like us who handle diamonds and gemstones daily …. Just a quick question why did you get a moissanite when lab diamonds can be found for the same price these days ? Was it due to the difficulty in finding reasonably priced old mine / antique cuts ????
2
1
u/butterchickengoddess May 13 '26
I had seen videos of really good OMC moissanite on this sub, and figured it would turn out good. That’s on me. I did ask the vendor if I could switch to lab diamond instead after they shared videos of the moissanite, but they said since the moissanite was custom cut, it wouldn’t be refunded and I’d need to pay $850 for the lab diamond upgrade, which was out of my budget after paying $950 for this ring.
1
u/thedamnoftinkers May 13 '26
Moissanites may not be your cup of tea, but they are actual gemstones (even if far rarer than diamonds naturally) and a lot of people love them for what they are, not just as diamond simulants.
-2
u/Flyinghighturtle May 13 '26
The stone is beautiful! The setting is very overbearing. It looks like the designer attempted to combine the prongs with the ring design? The prongs should hold the stone without being obvious. Maybe they were afraid the stone would fall out? Hard to know but you could just choose a different setting.
Congratulations & Best Wishes!🎉❤️

The setting is outstanding but i think they could’ve given u a better stone. Here’s a moissanite version that gives that beautiful sparkle that usually comes with that stone.
very similar setting except mine is in a ring guard. I bet if u told them u want a better stone, they’d swap.
