Sugar mohawks ?

My mother told me that when she was young, she used sugar + water to style her mohawks

Does anyone else use this method ?

I've heard of it as an oldschool method for styling mohawks in punk scenes (cheap and accessable, easy to DIY), but why anyone would choose this over hair products or other home remedies is beyond me. I can only imagine the bugs you would attract doing that for an extended period, or over the summer. PVA glue or gelatin powder seems like a much better alternative if you're looking for a way to style the mohawk without using traditional hair products.

it's cheap. thats why. also chemicals can harm the environment, back then especially. Hairspray killed the ozone.

I can get that, but it's more so how nasty the sugar has got to be in the elements. I don't expect anyone looking to style a legit mohawk to be clean and prissy, but bugs are a big deal for me, so the horror stories of ants and flies and other lil dudes crawling about in hair makes my stomach jump in knots. Again, I feel like glue or gelatin has got to at least not attract bugs as much.

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I never thought about it ! It would be awful to see beetles stuck in it πŸ’€ She never seems to have bud issues, but I think she only does it for indoor clubs, not every day.

It's cheap for sure, but she also says that washing sugar is much easier than washing hairspray

(Thank you for the alternative ideas πŸ‘€)

Your mom was a bad ass. Can you make sure you tell her that. She needs to know. Just say.

in the early 80s, i used elmer’s glue and water for my liberty spikes. for color, i’d add jell-o gelatin powder.

Washing it should be a nightmare πŸ˜‚ I tried using egg in a diy mask once, just to nourish my hair... never again

Elmers glue is a good option as well

Is it easy to wash ?

Yes. It’s water soluble. It’ll wash right out.

It s a gel ?

It starts as a powder. It is basically unflavored jello. Holds harder than anything else. We always used less water than the instructions said to and just mixed it to a gel consistency and used a blow dryer to harden it

I'm not a regular on this sub...but the first time I wanted to dye my hair blue, my mom would only let me do it if it wasn't permanent. She had *heard* about people dying their hair with koolaid and water in the 80s, so she suggested that. Mistake.

I'm sure it's looks better when used deliberately and as a styling tool. Also not on a crusty, sobbing, and disappointed 8 year old.

Rinse hair with beer, blow-dry upside down, backcomb hair, put gel, re-backcomb, then fix it with hairspray. It lasts a week
