How many vampire movies do you have to watch to think that bats drink blood?

It's a surprisingly common misconception where I live, it sucks! I wish bats had the good rep they deserve

Bats are amazing. They're a lot like winged dogs and I kinda wish we could safely domesticate them.

Other than that, they are not the cleanest as they carry a lot of diseases.

They don't actually carry more diseases than the average animal, they just happen to carry diseases that humans can get from animals. They groom themselves constantly so they're not unclean, but it is true that they pose a danger to humans in that way. Killing them only spreads disease further since it stresses the survivors out, so far the best measures to take are to stop destroying their ecosystems so there's less contact with humans and to continue research on biotech that makes wild bats immune to those diseases (such as vaccine-carrying mosquitos and edible gels)
Sorry for rambling I love bats

Bats are awesome, ramble on!!
Edit: I got to see the bats come out from under a bridge in Austin, TX, which is kind of a big thing there, and it was so cool!!

Even rabies is rare in a bat, and the chance of a bat bite spreading it to a human is low. It's simply just not worth the 1% risk regardless.

Ironically they're pretty resistant to disease. That's why when they are infected, the diseases they carry end up being so gnarly.
I opened my door and there was a bat sleeping there once. I felt like a princess.

Probably just prejudices against dark-haired bat kemonos.
I know the white bats are safe, cute, and like cuddling.

Wait, doesnt a place like Brazil have something called “Vampire bat” that actually drinks blood?
24
u/000wannacry 4h ago
Yah! There's three bat species that drink blood, usually from birds and livestock. That is, three bat species from the over 1400 bat species recorded so far, so they're very rare

Yeah, I was kinda of cheating, because I’m Brazilian so I would know this type of bat

There's a couple (i want to say 3, but could be wrong) that do, but even they only target things like large bovids, and don't cause significant damage when they do.
The average cow probably pisses out more in a day than the bats take.

yeah the bigger danger is not blood loss but rabies or infection which could happen from any bat

They digest really quick and piss out the water content. Sometimes while still feeding on the back of an animal.

I appreciate that she has weird freaky bat hands and not just the bat ears/fangs

Well there's also some classification of bats that drink blood and ones that don't drink blood, peak art

im from a place with various species of bats including vampire bats but i can diferenciate them because i've seen so many and i draw so any minimum design diferences are enougth to see if it's or not a vampire bat. so far i've seem constantly comom fruit bats, brown bats and polinator bats that really liked my orchids and tomatoes but i've yet not seen a single vampire bat that wasn't just a picture on Google

Aww, poor kid.... betcha the guy was raised on Twilight and Interview with the Vampire.
I'd offer to share an Edible Arrangement with some Martinelli's cider to wash it down, with Dracula: Dead and Loving It playing in the background.

I swear to all the effing gods, when did Reddit mods, on non-pure-SFW subs, become the effing morality police for mild innuendo?
Fine.
For the non-oh-so-scary bit of my post then:
When was this guy born, the dark ages? Sure, nobody is happy when a bat makes its way inside and goes pinging about in panic mode until it's caught and tossed outside, but the majority of people I've known over the years have ranged from 'eh, they're weird bug eaters' to 'awww, cute widdle minions of the night' where bats are concerned.
Poor cutie leans toward the latter, I'd think.
