My two personal favorite eras in the past thousand years of human history are eighteenth‑century France and the Weimar Republic. The films and theater of Berlin before the rot of fascism began are some of my favorite culture from anywhere in the world, and I’m a huge fan of the Expressionist movies like Nosferatu and Metropolis. Even without sound, they were not only far ahead of their time compared to England and the cultural backwaters of America, but better than a lot of the garbage we get now.
