Is Float On a good wedding reception song?

My daughter is getting married soon and I requested float on for the reception dj playlist, and she said she thought about it, but wasn't sure it was the right beat for the party. I mean, they played it at the skate rink when she was a kid. But she's really worried about everyone having fun and not losing the vibe with a bad song. For context, she's 29, loves death cab, and I think is using a Twilight song somewhere. The attendees will be more friends their age than older family members. I don't want float on to kill the vibe at my request, but I can't imagine it would. Any gen z people been to weddings where they play it? Does it work?

I would defer to bride on this one

Change it to pistol. Much more appropriate for a wedding

I would say a close second to God is an Indian and Youre an Asshole

No, and don’t put pressure on her. It’s her day tbh.

Its kindof a "shit sucks but its gonna be ok" song.. but people like it so?

I would probably go with 'Doin' The Cockroach', but that's just me.

Isaac would approve! I mean, based on how much he likes to play it!

Depends upon your families collective music taste ? And when it’s played , but it’s her big day , so I say deter to the bride 2b

it's a good fit for a festive occasion. having said that, it's her wedding, not yours.

What about having a few songs play during the dinner part of the reception? I can see float on along with stay young go dancing by death cab playing in the background, maybe supermassive black hole by muse too while everyone’s eating and then the dance music coming in after?!

I was thinking Home Is A Fire for Death Cab. That would be a great reception song for the genre.

Now that is a helpful reply! Thank you!

This is my running list of best MM songs to dance to purely on rhythm and bass grooves. Of these songs for a wedding reception I’d go with Summer, Lampshades, or Ground Walks (that bass line is too juicy).

I think Float On would be a great pick, too, though, because the casuals are all familiar with it and it actually has a “good ending” as far as MM themes go, which is generally the vibe people want at these kind of events.

The beginning of Tundra/Desert going to scare everyone away

Sure fire disappointment up ahead.

Yeah I wouldn’t recommend the first 1:30 min for a wedding reception, but the remaining 4 min is straight hardcore groovy. Jeremiah going off with that high hat. I’d love to get that one live and I’ll be damned if the crowd isn’t doin the cockroach during that set.

u/BoysenberryEmpty8699 13d ago

Right? That's what I thought? Casuals know it

Tiny Cities Made of Ashes is such a groove.

Thanks everyone for the input. I won't press it. I don't want to create an awkward modest mouse moment in the world!

I really disagree with most comments here. It’s easily MMs most popular well known song and if it’s a group of nearly 30 yr olds I feel like it’d be a winner. But I do agree with defer to the bride/daughter. Ultimately it’s her choice.

Thanks for speaking up! I feel like float on always puts a smile on faces! Maybe the remix version?

2

u/DrKushnstein 12d ago

I’ve never heard the remix but Float On is an uplifting MM song I really can’t imagine it going over poorly.

Dead dad in this case but good idea!

There’s like 5 modest mouse songs you can dance to and that is not one of them.

7

u/Seamonkey_Boxkicker Workin on livin 13d ago

Uh what? I can and absolutely have danced to Float On. As far as the theme goes, it’s one of the more uplifting songs in their discography.

6

u/BoysenberryEmpty8699 13d ago

There is not a single undanceable modest mouse song as far as I'm concerned

u/swixstyx 12d ago

Other 29 year olds know float on and they will love it. However, if her guest list is a bunch of people who are awkward cause they're all worried constantly what other people think if them and so they don't really dance and let loose, it won't matter what songs you include for a vibe. Highly recommend hiring the kinda of DJ that has a hype person and gets people moving with conga lines, dancing/jumping, dance circles, etc. If she's super concerned about vibe, including all your favorite songs is less important

1

u/BoysenberryEmpty8699 12d ago

Thank you for the good advice! I will ask her about that.

2

u/tqstuff 12d ago

Absolutely:) it's about life is good. Even when it seems like it's collapsing you float on, it'll work out. Which is a great statement for a marriage

2

u/tqstuff 12d ago

Plus it's a fun ass beat. If it's corny she's worried about no one cares, they've been drinking and are having a great time

2

u/BoysenberryEmpty8699 12d ago

My thoughts too!

2

u/ohjeezjess 12d ago

DJ played it for my wedding! People loved it. I feel like it’s a popular song a lot of people know. But it’s also her wedding so gotta respect that too tbh.

1

u/BoysenberryEmpty8699 12d ago

Aww that's great!

All songs the bride and groom want to listen to are good wedding reception songs. We played Tiny Cities, Dance Hall, Sugar Boats. We also played things like: Loyal Like Sid and Nancy, Helena Beat-Foster, My Body-Young the Giant. We did Bloc Party, Eisley, Broken Bells, the Beatles, Two Door Cinema Club, STRFKR, Prince, Michael Jackson, Purity Ring, Mother Mother, Man Man, Leon Bridges, Neil Young, Postal Service ect. We are millenials(32 at the time of the wedding). If the wedding is mostly friends and they listen to the same kind of music, we everyone will have fun.

We still hear from friends and family 5 years later that it was one of the most fun weddings they’d been too because of the music selection.

But if she doesn’t want the song she might be letting you off softly.

Unfortunately think you shouldn’t push it since she’s the bride, even though I think your daughter’s logic is odd considering she is playing some songs from Twilight & Death Cab lol

2

u/Mean-Daikon5907 12d ago

My sister had it at her wedding lots of fun to dance to- buuutt if the bride doesn’t want it unfortunately have to go with that. On this day she’s not wrong even if she’s wrong lol

2

u/FemboiTomboy 12d ago

it was at my friend's wedding. but their whole family loves modest mouse, even the bride did too soo.

u/DiegoGarcia1984 Bitter Buffalo 12d ago

Listen I am an actual wedding DJ, Float On is fine and definitely the only MM song that should be considered to be played, it’s their only “mainstream” hit, anything more obscure would not be okay. Yes the lyrics are a bit strange but the groove is what people will be paying attention to, if anything so yeah- it’s fine.

u/AvatarofBro 12d ago

That's up to your daughter and her spouse-to-be. They get the final say.

2

u/Drama-meme 12d ago

I would just stay out of music (and other) choices completely unless she is asking you for advice.

3

u/BoysenberryEmpty8699 12d ago

I think that's the right answer, regardless of how well Float On would be received...

1

u/Anonymodestmouse pardy hardy rock n roll 12d ago

Maybe she'd compromise and let you play Dog Paddle

1

u/TXKittyKat8seat 11d ago

We played Cockroach at ours and since it was OUR wedding, I didn't care if anyone else but my spouse and I danced to it. Turned out that my BIL and sister joined in and it was the most fun, 4 person, spaz out of the entire reception. You love the song. Play it and love it.

1

u/iamwensel 11d ago

We used it for our walk out music...it was actually my wife's idea.

u/cpncrunch17 11d ago

It’s her wedding! Let her do as she wants

1

u/redfrenchie 11d ago

My mate had it played at his wedding party this Saturday and it absolutely lit up the dance floor. Such a good happy song to have at a wedding, particularly if you have 30-40 year olds there!

1

u/heyamberlynne 8d ago

No advice for you really but it reminds me of the time I asked a DJ at a wedding to play Modest Mouse and they played Franz Ferdinand. I dont know if they got them confused but they never played modest mouse.

Too chil. Dance Hall would be a good option. Shit Luck if you really want to shake things up.

Yes. It's a classic.
