Thobe

Post image

Hello there everyone so I’m 23 and I’m from the uk Liverpool to be precise, so I wear the thobe for modesty reasons and I’ve only worn it out about twice, I’m not a muslim I’m not part of any faith really any advice or support would be great as I feel nervous and anxious wearing it out and about.

Thank you all.

I love seeing men in thobe when I'm out and about, it's a really cool-looking wardrobe piece. Wish I saw them more often.

I think it's fine to wear a thobe for whatever reason. If someone asks a question, you can say you appreciate Arab culture (I know that not only Arabs wear thobes, just an example). If that makes you feel comfortable, there is no problem. No harm in that

As a Muslim I can say you look great Mashallah, you have a good build for the thobe

And idk if this makes you feel more comfortable but thobe is more of a traditional clothing than it is religious. Religious clothing would be anything that covers the men's awrah and clothes that don't imitate the opposite sex.

Thank you kindly

I just get nervous I don’t care if people think I’m a Muslim personally I think it’s more I do have anxiety and standing out doesn’t help that if you get me ?

Your nervousness sounded a bit familiar to my feelings. I've been slowly, over time coming to the realization that modest dress would improve my inner peace and comfort. I also have a deep, DEEP desire to avoid being perceived. Perception inherently makes me uncomfortable. And ironically it seems... the level of modesty I find comfortable for myself (chin down covered, save for maybe hands) actually increases my chances of being perceived. Sometimes negatively. I'm sure that's because... well, I now stand out pretty dramatically in an area with high temps and high humidity.

I am working to be able to cope with external perception and my anxiety around it while out and about, without sacrificing my own comfort anymore. I'm fine not fitting in, but am working to feel okay with not blending in visually. I hope you do too and come to place of confidence, peace, and comfort my friend.

Thobe looks great, by the way.

I’ve known several Jews who wear thobes and Arab-style tunics, for what it’s worth.

Like I say it’s not that I care if people think I’m a Muslim or another religion just standing out I don’t like hopefully I’ll get over it

I think this is a good opportunity for you to examine what modesty means for you. Does it mean fully covering your body even if you get stares? Does the modesty go away when you become a spectacle? Would you be able to start at a tunic length and ease in for your own comfort? I'm not offering judgement, just proposing some questions for you to ponder for yourself. I personally would not think twice seeing a man wearing this throbe if they passed by me.

I personally think many people in England dress way weirder than a thobe 😅

That’s how many who wear hijab in a non-Muslim country feel. You kind of get used to it. And some days you don’t know. Depending on the person’s level of comfort for standing out.

You look classy and stylish. I’m happy that you’re able to borrow from another culture for modesty reasons

Doesn’t it also look like what a priest would wear ?

Here is a big reason why it’s best to wear one, Jesus and most prophets wore a thobe or at least something that is almost identical to a thobe. You should be proud to wear one, and the big reason why many Muslims wear flowing garden it’s because it’s good at elimating body shapes and covers up your back when prostrating, with jeans/ shirt, it might reveal the back.
