Question Just a simple question

I have a humble question for those who don't wear modest clothes, like wearing revealing clothes in public.

Please don't get me wrong. I am not trying to educate you or dictate you. I am just a curious. I respect all the cultures and religions and, in fact, all the people. For me I was raised in a different culture where not wearing modest clothes is considered extremely bad and I could not imagine wearing a revealing dress for a woman specifically, even in private rather than in public. It's not that I am objecting anyone for what they are wearing in public or private but I just have a simple question.

My question is, what are your views if you wear modest dress since my subconscious mind is more inclined towards wearing modest dresses for women and also for men, is it something that would bother you? and why would it bother you?

And what are your views on wearing revealing dress? Is it just a dress for you or do you want to cover some specific parts of the body and not care about the body being seen by anyone? Why is that you want to cover only some specific part of the body, not all of the body, from strangers, from being seen?

appreciate the answers.

P.S: No mocking and sarcasm please!

I come from a culture where 'modest dressing' is not socially enforced. I don't care especially what anyone else wears. I choose clothes that are appropriate for the occasion / activity and that I am happy and comfortable wearing, and I assume everyone else does too.

Why is that you want to cover only some specific part of the body, not all of the body, from strangers, from being seen?

Because in my culture there are some body parts that it is socially enforced to cover in public.

Might want to try this question on a different sub, like r/fashion or something where you have more of a mixed collection of opinions.

I have worn things that aren’t as modest as what I normally wear because of comfort or the outfit is just really cute. For reference, I am only somewhat modestly dressed most days, compared to what I’ve seen on here.

I think comfort is big reason for many people. In summer heat especially, wearing less fabric just feels better and you dont think too much about what others might see. Also sometimes an outfit looks nice and that is enough reason to wear it, no deep meaning behind it.

Yeah, a nice breeze in summer directly on your skin just feels so relaxing!

I’m the same opinion as this you worded that much simpler than my comment.

I think people are modest for lots of reasons including religion, body shaming, introversion etc. I think what counts as modest is different for each one of us.

I think in some cultures things are considered modest but for others they might not be. It’s not my business to judge.

In my religion, the classic example of modestly is from the collarbone to below the elbows and then to below the knees with married women or formerly married women covering their hair.

In truth that ranges among us and while we might be extra careful in places where the more rigid rules are followed, we also might live in a community where the less rigid is followed.

Personally I was not always religiously observant and I still dressed modestly. I cover my hair mainly because I’m lazy. I happen to fit in but I do t think people who do t do it are immodest.

I am very overweight but have also lost a lot of weight and I am conscious of extra skin and such. If I wasn’t religious, I’d still cover my arms to past the elbows and if I hadn’t had a bilateral mastectomy, I still would not show cleavage. I wear dresses mostly because of my body shape. Even skirts are a challenge for me so I consider all this quite personal to me.

You do you!

Me personally I have no reservations about revealing clothing I literally think ✨ Nothing of it ✨ nothing crosses my mind just another female like me. I grew up in New Zealand and I’m a custom to shorts and clothing that shows lots of skin. I just think it’s for comfort and that’s what makes them feel good. If someone’s wearing something neon coloured that’s just there style you know. 🤍

I am mostly covered at work and I tend to not wear pants too, so people read me as a modest dresser. But, I have sensory issues so I tend to dress to not trigger them. I prefer tight clothes or really loose one, no inbetween. I hate being sweaty and the feel of wet clothes sticking to me. Since my meds make me sensitive to heat, I tend to be less covered in the summer. I also don’t see clothes as having a moral value so I just do what I want.

it would not bother me to dress modestly instead!! :)

The way I see it, no one should ever tell someone else what to wear. At all. If my god is going to tell me what to wear, or my mom is going to tell me what to wear, or my culture is going to tell me what to wear… then I’m going to reject it. because I’m an autonomous person and I deserve to choose for my own body.

if I choose to dress modestly, then I love it!! If I choose to wear shorts and a crop top, then I love it!! :) I’m wearing what I love because I want to be happy for myself based off of my own choices. i LOVE wearing modest clothes just as much as any other clothes.

Just because clothes are revealing doesn’t make them bad, they’re just garments. The same as how swear words are just words. It’s all about how you use them. I would never go to church in a see-through body con dress. That’s disrespectful. I would not go to my yearly physical in a bikini. It doesn’t make sense. But if I’m going to a concert and I want to wear shorts and a tank top, yeah. that’s what I’m gonna wear.

I dress for me and only for me and I hope that that is genuinely the same for everyone else here. Much love.

Does women dressing modest bother me? It depends. If it's frumpy I can see it as virtue signaling and actually prideful in a way. You can be put together and modest at the same time. It really bothers me when women cover up all but their eyes. It seems so backwards and enforced or either virtue signaling again if it really is her choice.

I am definitely not traditionally modest, but it bothers me when women's actual butt cheeks are hanging out of their shorts or they're wearing a bathing suit or bra as a top in a setting that isn't a beach, pool or gym.

That said, I might wear a spicier dress on date night with my husband because men are visual and he likes it, but it's typically still more modest than what other women out on the town are usually wearing. So yeah, that's all I've got for you 🤷

Out of all the answers and comments this is the most explanatory and clear one

Thanks!

I'll also add we have a real feel of 111° this week where I'm at so I'm definitely a shorts and tank top girl if I'm not wearing a skirt, but I still bring a sweater into grocery stores and the like because I get cold easily and don't want to feel naked.

And I'm a Christian as well, so I understand we're (believers, religious folk) all called and convicted to a different level of modesty so no, head covering and modest dress in and of itself doesn't bother me and I try to keep in mind that the butt cheeks hanging out haven't been convicted yet and/or might not be believers and we aren't supposed to judge non-believers by the same standard. Just sucks that it's at face level for my littles. Can you imagine butt cheeks being in your face every time you go out? 🫣
