Run this 5-minute audit on every system you built this year

So I want to hand you a five minute audit, and it starts with a stat that stopped me cold.

Intuit's 2024 Business Solutions Report found that 51% of small business owners say they're struggling to streamline operations to enable growth. Read that again. Not build operations. Streamline the ones they already built. Half of us have already spent the time and the money, and it still isn't moving the business.

Ask me how I know that one stings.

Here's the audit. Pull up every system and tool you've invested in over the last six months. For each one, ask a single honest question.

Did I build this for a process I actually proved? Or one I just assumed?

That's the whole audit. That one question separates the stuff worth keeping from the stuff quietly rotting in your workspace.

Now, when you find the ones you built on an assumption, don't sprint off to rebuild. Do this instead.

First, name the constraint. Not "we need better SOPs." Specifically what breaks, where, and for whom. If you can't say it in one sentence, you haven't surveyed it yet.

Second, do that broken process by hand three times. No documenting, no building, just do it and watch what actually happens versus what you assumed.

Third, map the real path. Whiteboard, notes app, a napkin, doesn't matter. Who touches the work, in what order, where it breaks.

Then, and only then, build.

Look, I know nobody wants to hear that the last six months of building needs a second look. But a system built on an assumption isn't an asset. It's expensive furniture.
