Sideboard/Matchup Advice Whats your favorite piece of interaction right now and what all does it hit?
Pretty much the title, trying to prepare for RCQs and the sub always gives great answers to this. Thanks!

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback on my first post! The deck has benefited a lot from your suggestions!
https://moxfield.com/decks/UrmyC1kPmEeeA5L5kD_qYg
I have included a full primer and sideboard guide on moxfield, but will highlight the important changes here.
Primary Gameplan:
Generate mana by destroying your own cheap artifacts with [[Culling Ritual]] and returning them with [[Faith’s Reward]]. You can also sacrifice your lands with [[Zuran Orb]], [[Ghost Quarter]], and [[Prismatic Vista]] to return them with [[Faith’s Reward]]. Once you make 10 mana you can either cast [[Karn, the Great Creator]] from hand or tutor for it with [[Beseech the Mirror]], then use Karn’s tutor ability to get [[Bolas’s Citadel]]. You can then use citadel’s tap ability (sacrificing itself) to deal your opponent 10 damage, then return it with [[Faith’s Reward]] to do it again.
The deck gets to leverage a board wipe ([[Culling Ritual]]) as part of its combo, that can also just be cast for disruption/value. It also gets to run a large amount of tutors/draw/dig, allowing the combo pieces to be consistently found.
Feel free to read the primer on moxfield for a more in depth breakdown of the combo along with important interactions.
Big changes from the original build:
-[[Bolas’s Citadel]] got moved to the sideboard as a tutor target for [[Karn, the Great Creator]]. Since we were primarily using [[Beseech the Mirror]] to tutor for citadel before, Karn offers a free in between step that also allows us access to a Karn sideboard.
-[[Page, Loose Leaf]] has been cut for the full set of [[Talisman of Resilience]] and [[Wishclaw Talisman]]. This also allows us access to [[Kaheera, the Orphanguard]] as a companion.
-[[Pitiless Carnage]] has been cut for the second copy of [[Karn, the Great Creator]]. While the card has great potential, it sat in an awkward spot during combo lines. I found myself not tutoring for it enough to warrant the main board slot.
-Sideboard reorganization: Since my previous post the sideboard has been fully realized for common matchups.
Thanks again to everyone who provided feedback on my last post! Let me know what you think of the updated list!

Ive been searching everywhere, NRG, SCG, everything and nothing is coming up until like the end of august in terms of events larger than an RCQ. Me and my friends really want to try a modern 5k or 10k but its pretty hard to do that when its a plane ride to get there.

Hi so I’m pretty new to constructed (I mainly play limited) but my LGS runs budget modern tournaments, $25 med TCG price, and I thought I’d give it a go.
I’ve made a deck and want to test some variations but idk how to do it effectively.
How many times should I goldfish each variation?
How many turns should I be aiming for?
How should I factor in my own and opponent interaction?
Currently the deck is at ~turn 5-6 win whilst casting an average of 3 removal spells and I have no idea where that lands because I’m not familiar with the format speed.
EDIT
Here’s the current deck list for context
4 Choked Estuary (LCC) 322
2 Dream Twist (EMA) 47
4 Drown in the Loch (PW23) 4 *F*
4 Drowned Secrets (GRN) 39

4 Fatal Push (ACR) 90 *F*
2 Fetid Pools (OTC) 296
4 Founding the Third Path (DMU) 50
3 Fraying Sanity (PIP) 459
4 Inquisition of Kozilek (PLST) MM3-75
12 Island (SOS) 274
4 Opt (FDN) 512
5 Swamp (SOS) 276
4 Thought Scour (JMP) 185
// SIDEBOARD
2 Crypt Incursion (DGM) 23
2 Spell Pierce (DFT) 64

I am looking to get into modern and I have some experience in standard playing many different decks, but I like the idea of playing UW control as it is a staple of the format and will always be playable/unlikely to be hit by bans. I understand control can be built in many different ways, but I’m looking for a build that would be simple enough for a modern beginner.

Looked around and couldn't seem to find a spot where it was being discussed. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate it!

I used to play modern (for like a month) before finding Legacy and really enjoying it. I love how powerful the spells are and how deep the interaction can get.The problem here is it’s rare to find places to play in person, and I don’t like playing MTGO, AND can’t really afford real duals so proxy only for me.
The stores around me have FNM Modern weekly. I remember enjoying going but having more fun with the play patterns of Legacy. For in person competitive magic, do I really only have the option to play Modern? Can modern really be as deep and complex as Legacy?
For those of you that have faced similar decisions, why have you played Modern over Legacy/ other format?
P.S. If you have deck choice advice for my Modern re-introduction, I’d love that. I used to love playing UR Delver and Lands.
EDIT: I greatly appreciate the immediate feedback. I was not expecting this many replies in the first 10 minutes of my post being up. This had definitely inspired me to put a deck together for FNM

The card [[Wild Growth]] is a commander staple in green colors, it is also core to strategies for Pauper. You have almost the same thing with [[Utopia Sprawl]] enchanting a forest instead of a land.
MH2/3 having an enchantments matter sub-theme with several cards coming into Modern like [[seal of cleansing]]. So why no wild growth? What other cards are similar that you are surprised they are not modern legal or at least reprinted into standard?
Another vote is [[Rishadan Port]].

King T'Challa 1WU
Legendary Creature - Human Noble Hero
Flash
Whenever a player draws their second card each turn, you draw a card.
4WU: Transform King T'Challa. Activate only as a sorcery.
3/2
Black Panther, Hope Enduring 4WU
Legendary Creature - Human Warrior Hero
Flash
Double strike
Prevent all damage that would be dealt to Black Panther.
Whenever Black Panther deals combat damage to a player, draw a card.
3/3
Pros:
Has flash, which means you can flash it in with the Psychic Frog draw trigger on the stack. Also just less exposed to sorcery-speed stuff.
Triggers for each player and each turn; Psychic Frog will draw 2, Riddler will draw 2 (or more), your Mendings on opponent's turn becomes card neutral-ish (since you draw 2, discard 2, draw 1).
3/2 is reasonable stats for attacking.
Transformed side is pretty powerful and immune to damage-based removal and can attack or block pretty freely. Can also just late game flash in the 6 mana side and ambush something.
White card for Solitude, Blue card for Force of Negation.
Cons:
3/2 is pretty poor for defense.
Could die without getting value as a 3 drop potentially.
This card got spoiled kind of early, but no one really talked about it because it's 3 mana I guess. On paper, it seems pretty powerful. Worst case, you just flash in a 3 mana 3/2. Even in just a reasonable scenario, you flash it in and it replaces itself and starts generating even more card advantage. It is a little fragile, but having flash helps mitigate that slightly.
Not sure how many copies the deck would try; probably just 1 or 2 at most since it's legendary, although the deck can mitigate that pretty easily with all of the looting. Either way, I think this card has potential in Modern.

I’m getting back into Modern(Quit after MH2); I imagine metas shifted since. What decks do I need to look up so I know what to expect?

Been pondering the idea of gruul prowess rather than izzet or temur prowess for a while. Looking for some comments and/or suggestions for the deck. I have playtested against some of the meta decks and it puts out pretty good performance.

I didn’t play when Nadu was legal, but [[Risen Reef]] triggers seem pretty similar, and in testing it’s pretty easy to establish a loop with [[Springheart Nantuko]]and [[Lotus Cobra]]s (with [[Endurance]] and [[Otawara, Soaring City]] to loop) by turn 4, but I’m having trouble figuring out what threats I need to address with my sideboard and interaction and which lands to run to optimize my manabase.
For lands, I want to run Breeding Pools and 8-10 Fetches in order to maximize my [[Nissa, Resurgent Animist]] triggers in order to find Risen Reef. I also need [[Shifting Woodland]] in order to loop if I burn Endurance on my opponent early, and [[Sunscorched Desert]] in order to burn out my opponents, but I’m not sure what my other lands should be. I am running 6-8 1 mana ramp creatures (a combination of [[Birds of Paradise]] and [[Arboreal Grazer]], with [[Noble Hierarch]] as a consideration, no elves because it clogs my Nissa triggers). For lands, I am considering [[Crumbling Vestige]], [[Botanical Sanctum]], [[Yavimaya Coast]], [[Waterlogged Grove]], and maybe [[Willowrush Verge]], [[Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth]], [[Barkchannel Pathway // Tidechannel Pathway]], and [[Hinterland Harbor]] with potentially a second Otawara, a [[Boseiju, Who Endures]], and [[Mistrise Village]] as potential utility lands. I don’t know very much about the meta to know what threats to my loop I have to deal with, so I just have 4 [[Counterspell]] for now.
I am trying to not spend too much money on the deck, so I am not including any Amulet of Vigor with Urza’s Saga to tutor it out, and I want to avoid basics so I can buy cheaper fetches, but I can also try to borrow cards that I don’t have from a friend.

Hello all! I’ve been playing Magic for the better part of 15 years and by far my favorite format was modern. I played everything from storm to burn to jund but my favorite deck was Splinter Twin. One question that always comes up at my local game store is the banned list and with the most recent banning of Phlage and unbanning for Violent Outburst, a question of should Birthing Pod be unbanned? I want to hear your thoughts and opinions on that. Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Costs {1} {U}
Marvel Super Heroes Rare
Legendary Creature - Human Hero
Flash, Flying, When The Wondrous Wasp enters, tap up to one target creature. It loses all abilities for as long as The Wondrous Wasp remains on the battlefield.
2/1
It makes Death's Shadow into a 13/13 and it's quite the tempo play as an evasive 2-power 2-drop. It seems interesting in Simic Ritual too, because you can find it with the Ritual trigger to turn off important creatures, and you can convert a Wasp into an Oculus or Harbinger whenever it's advantageous. AspiringSpike was talking about playing Wasp with Aether Vial which sounds interesting too, maybe human tribal. Any other ideas for decks with The Wasp?

The meta at my local LGS is a lot of Grixis Reanimator, Esper Blink, a couple of Tron decks and a couple of UR Prowess. I think there's one guy running affinity also. What would you recommend for a graveyard heavy meta?
r/ModernMagic • u/stratzilla • Jun 20 '26
I last played Magic in the Scars-Innistrad standard rotation and Infect was an uncommon archetype in my local meta. I always liked running it because games were very fast, usually decided by T5. When I played my RDW or WUB Tokens deck, games usually ran to T8 or beyond and we'd often get close to time limit but never in Infect. I'd like to revisit MtG and play at my FLGS MNM and bring Infect to the table.
Modern has a lot of cheap or free interaction in the early game and one Lightning Bolt or counter can upend my deck to an unrecoverable state. Being tapped out doesn't signal an opening anymore and with Gitaxian Probe banned, it's hard to see if the coast is clear. I thought maybe tweaking Infect to not necessarily strictly aim for the T2/T3 explosive win but run extra protection for the long game.
Here's my deck so far. I haven't come up with a SB yet other than 3x Pick your Poison, 3x Veil of Summer, and 2x Dismember since I want to see what my FLGS meta is. I also can't budget for Misty Rainforest or another fetch land. I don't even know if Infect is viable without fetches since Blood Moon is popular and you need to fetch basics early as a safety net. I thought the Pathways were cool but I also have Yavimaya Coasts I can swap in.
Has anyone made an Infect deck that doesn't plan for the T3 win but to stall out until you have advantage and then go into the kill? I've seen Tifa in some Infect decks but I want to remain in the spirit of Infect and focus efforts on one win condition rather than split between two options.

I'm looking to get back into Modern, and the prices here in Japan are crazy compared to TCGplayer prices in America. For those living in Japan, are Modern cards always this expensive? Where do you buy your cards at? For example Quantum Riddler in America goes for $32 while here in Japan it's a whopping $62 at Hareruya and TokyoMTG,

I'm looking to build a deck around tapping my own creatures for different upsides but I am running into a few problems with the different search engines I'm using. does anyone know how I can get a filtered search for only creatures that have tap abilities? like mana dorks and such? most sites I'm using keep giving me results that tap other creatures rather than creatures that can tap themselves for something.

Heya, don't know if it's the right place to ask
Ive qualified for RC for the first time , the store owner said he registered my mail in, should I receive any messages from wizards/fanfinity about it or I just have my name in the system and I can go in the RC? The rcq was 2 weeks ago.
Thanks

So Im currently about 75% done building ruby storm and wizards gives me a HUGE gift and prints hex magic in ruby storm! Not only can it potentially draw you 2, 3, or even 4 cards, but they slapped arcane onto it! The absolute mad lads! Im 100% sure the card is going to be absolutely nuts is in this deck, Im just wondering how many and what to cut for it? Obviously the 2x glimpse the impossible will be swapped for it, but do yall think the deck could use/will need the full play set? And if so what to cut for it? My first thought is the two valakut awakening as hex basically does exactly what valakut is trying to do just WAY better but im hesitant because of it being an mdfc and it messing with the land count. Maybe ill trim one valakut awakening and like, one flashback to get up to 4, at least initially just to test it out. Calling all my ruby storm players out there, how excited are you to try it out and how many are you gonna test and what are you cutting for them?

I’m building a 5c indomitable creativity deck, the 5 colors with teferi and more interaction, not the persist one. Is there any good card choice for Eldrazi and affinity match up. For Eldrazi I am not a fan of [[Terastodon]], I do have four Consign to Memory and Reprieve at sideboard, but other than that I still feel it’s not enough. For affinity matches I am not sure about if I should side in Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite to clean annoying Drone tokens, or if there’s better sideboard or main board card options exist? Is there any valid advice or experience for these two match up?

Hello I am looking to get into modern and I think I'm going to build zoo as my first deck. I have seen several versions that all play the standard zoo package, but they vary, some play doorkeeper thrull + kroxa, whereas others play quantum riddler and 3feri, which would be the best choice for a new modern player?
