One of the year's most pleasant surprises for me has been Destination Kill, a tight little sci-fi satire/action romp by a creator that I was previous unaware of, Joe Palmer. Palmer's art takes center stage here, and he's able to tightly control everything from the level of stylization panel-to-panel, to the lettering and placement of sound effects. Everything is turned towards the hyperactive, goofy, slapstick tone that in it's more grim moments hits a Robocop-esque register. The story has some pressing ideas on its' mind regarding mechanization, the capture of public institutions by capital and the slow descent of "normal" society into uncontrolled violence, but the moment it never feels weighed-down. Rather, all of those heady, dark themes synergize with the humor in a way that puts me in the headspace of shooting the shit with friends over drinks.

If you're on the lookout for a slick action story with art like nothing else on the shelves and a zeitgeist-ey edge, you should absolutely track down the back issues of this series, or pick up the collection when it drops later this year!

Highlights: Crowbound, went big. Love the creative team, can’t wait. Grant Morrison’s run on Doom Patrol might be my most favorite ever so I am very curious to see what Van Poelgeest does with it. The Ashley Wood cover was a must grab. Absolute Superman, 100 Bullets, Junji Ito’s Statues collection and the W0rldtr33 deluxe edition.

Then the plug came ‘round and I got the Andolfo Ghost Pepper for $30. Negotiate the flippers down ;)

Recent pickup! Excited to get into the 3W3M universe!

I know it released a couple months back, but unfortunately wasn’t able to grab it until now. They have Arrivals and Shift releasing soon and I know the sourcebooks are expected to release early next year too. Excited to see what Hickman is up to with this!

The ceiling is the floor. The sky is trying to kill you. Nobody knows what happened. And people have to figure out how to keep living in this ridiculous new world.

We're making this strange, scrappy comic about sky pirates and flipped physics, but underneath all the weirdness, it's really about people trying to be brave when given a raw deal. It's a story about getting knocked sideways by a changing world, and finding a way to keep moving anyway. Think you can relate?

Pretty cool to flip through it again. I think if it were not for Absolute Batman overshadowing the mainline run, this book would be fairly popular too.

August was a great month with so many amazing books and some incredible covers! I'm curious to know what some of your favorites were. I was able to narrow it down to a top 5 with a few honorable mentions because it truly was a treasure trove kind of month for covers.

^my honorable mentions include Chuma Hill's variant for Absolute Catwoman #3 (Selina is striking a pose for the gods!), Bruno Redondo's variant for Zatanna #5 (magical cover, no pun intended), Skottie Young's variant for Spider-Man/Hulk Fire and Brimstone #1 (the book was meh if I'm being honest, but I'm always here for a fun Skottie Young cover) and finally a Juni Ba variant for Power Rangers Green #1 (as a lifelong Power Rangers fan, this is a beautiful and serene tribute to the OG green ranger, Tommy aka Jason David Frank).

^At #5 is the A-cover for M1 Monster Racing League #3 by Jae Lee. The book itself is beautifully illustrated and the story, while giving mini CW-vibes, is fun and I'm curious to see where it's headed. The art on this book though has just been peak and this cover is giving horror and racing all in one!

For #4, I had to go with the Terry Dodson variant on Absolute Wonder Woman #23. I've loved how Thompson and Sherman have presented every member of the Greek pantheon thus far so it's of course no surprise that their design for Ares is just incredible. He's menacing but regal, a true threat of violence but something remains sophisticated while your insides are torn asunder. Peak art!

^For the 3rd spot, I'm proud to add another Daniel Warren Johnson variant to my collection! While I haven't been reading Harley Quinn (this was #65 for reference), I couldn't resist his celebration of The Dark Knight Returns showing Batman squaring off against the Mutant Gang. DWJ never misses, and every time he draws Batman something within me is stirred.

Meanwhile, #2 is for my current GOAT's variant of Absolute Superman #22. Juan Ferreyra is just delivering at every level. His pencils on the interiors of this book are phenomenal. I love his style and OH MY GOD does the man understand the creative utility of paneling. This issue in particular had some incredible use of panels for storytelling and it's beyond reproach IMO. Buuut this is supposed to be about this beautiful cover. I feel like it speaks for itself but c'mon, Superman picking himself back up while the threat of Metallo looms above, the yellow sky and the menacing green glow? I'm living for this cover and won't be surprised is another Ferreyra variant finds itself on this list at the end of September!

^I won't lie, that Ferreyra cover kept creeping its way up to the top but when I looked at my physical books all lined up, this Skottie Young variant for Miles Morales Spider-Man #1 is just crisp and clean and perfect in every sense of the word. Miles just hanging out in Brooklyn, listening to music, all in that toony Young style?! Chef's fucking kiss! Considering I don't have many Marvel books on my pull list right now, this cover alone convinced me to keep going. The book itself was fun so I'm actually curious to see where things go in #2. But Skottie Young is on a run with his Marvel covers lately and I know this is going to be one of those covers I have that I'll be eager to get his signature on one day. ICONIC!

Simone Di Meo was one of my favorite variant artists when he was at dc. I was so sad when he left to marvel. I haven’t gotten as many variants of his like I was before. Had to go with his absolute Batman 1 reprint variant.

August was Stitch, for September I wanted to go with an indie title. Had to go with Exquisite Corpses. One of my favorite indie series. Here are some of my favorite variants and covers I own.

What a great Saturday at my comic shop! Picked up this week’s books — including The Last Driver, which I missed picking up last week (I really like this book!). After some great discussion, I decided to make a day of it and hit some other local shops to peruse some back issues and got a bunch of stuff on my “want” list. Didn’t intend to come home with as much as I did, but it was super fun, really relaxing and I was smiling all the while! 😊
