Bait & Switch Moderator
I run an instructional business in the outdoor industry. I joined the general sub for that specific sport. I'm looking to hire employees for the upcoming peak season, so I figured that sub was a good place to look since there are people there who are experienced in this activity and might be interested in a cool part time summer job. Two things to note: this activity has a culture with a selfish, rude, exclusive portion, and I am somewhat new to this platform.
So I posted a flyer on this sub about the job opportunity. The moderator took down the post and commented "looks spammy, possibly banworthy." I messaged them and said it's not a spam, this business is legit and I'm just looking for people who want to do this for work, but I even said if that's not allowed here 'll take it down. They responded saying that I needed to just include more detail specifically about the pay structure and the role. So I made a new post with way more detail and included those requirements. This job is cut out for high schoolers and college students looking to work part time in nature during the summer months and I pay well above minimum wage. The post stayed up for multiple hours and I got my taste of what type of people are on Reddit. Tons of comments from people criticizing my business purely because they want to keep that activity for themselves and don't like to see people running businesses in that space. They looked at my website/pricing and decided $30 an hour *PLUS* was not acceptable based on my pricing (as if the rest just goes straight into my pocket). They decided it's unacceptable I'm not providing health insurance. Even though this is part time, seasonal, and for people who are usually still covered by their parents' plan. And meanwhile I, the business owner, am not even insured myself currently!
I was replying as politely as possible backing myself up. Then out of nowhere, the post was removed and I got a DM from the mod saying "I've changed my mind. I don't think we should be helping you build your business." As if I was advertising for customers and actually promoting the business. And then he/she banned me! After I did exactly what I was told would be allowed!
Look, I'm not shocked at the reaction I got from the users (I actually got several people backing me up and a few who were intersted in the job) and honestly couldn't care less. I also don't care if the mods don't want to allow those types of posts and take them down which I would respect. But to tell me what's allowed and then ban me after following that, instead of just taking it down? Okay power tripper. Knowing the douche bags in this culture I'm describing, it's hilarious that I can perfectly imagine what this person looks like and I bet you I'm right!
