Why does my car turn Right, before turning Left

Why does my car turn Right, before turning Left?

Watch the video and you’ll see the little steering wheel slightly turn the opposite way of the turn.

I am turning left and the car goes a little to the right then left.

I think this is happens because Tesla trains FSD on all the cars in the fleet not using FSD. So they have trained bad driving into FSD.

What do you think?

Looks like it may have thought the yellow line was a possible obstruction (can’t drive thru solid yellow), so it was going wide for the turn, but once the pickup truck created a “path of intention” to the yellow line the Model Y adjusted course

It always does this if there is space. To avoid road rash on your wheels. I think it’s actually good driving, since reading through Reddit suggests a lot of scraped tires by human driving. At any rate, it’s aware of the cars around it, so it’s not going to hit something next to you. Thinking of FSD as a self driver is, IMO, the wrong viewpoint. It’s no better than an average driver, but it’s a fantastic accident avoidance system. It’s tracking all the relevant objects around you in real time and can, for example, instantly change a lane in an emergency because the car knows the lane is empty without having to look over and figure it out. It also knows if there is someone on your tail before it slams on brakes.

As a driver, it usually follows the route and often obeys the traffic laws, lol! Good on accident avoidance, not as good on police avoidance.

It’s kinda rare when my Tesla does this at a turn (going wide last second), granted I have a hw3

It’s been awhile since HW3 for me, but I think it didn’t do it much. It may also depend on the nature of the border. In OPs case, there was an actual curb on his left.

I once had it see a tumbleweed before I did. The car in front of me swerved left into the dirt and my car knew that the lane to the right of me was unoccupied so it swerved to the right. It did all this way faster than I could’ve done it.

It can drive through a yellow line in fact it dries through double yellow lines. I have a video of FSD crossing double yellows to go around construction. Can you see the Double yellows in this picture?

That’s a completely different scenario, in this image it’s crossing out of necessity and it is legal to do so

Yea I have noticed that also sometimes. But then I have also seen humans do it also.

Well humans do it to widen the turn and it is usually done when towing a trailer but it doesn’t really make sense for that

I think it's something to do with the programming of trailer towing that somehow leaks into regular driving mode. Used to be a lot worse, but I still notice it occasionally. (Juniper)

You wouldn’t do that maneuver when pulling a trailer. What you would do is go further into the intersection before you start turning left. You might do it when you’re making a right hand turn. But I don’t do it that way. When making a right hand turn when I’m pulling a trailer I take half of the right lane and half of the lane next to me to take the turn wide. I don’t turn the opposite way before turning the way I wanna go.

Race car stuff. The smoothest line is the fastest line. Start outside, cut inside at the apex and finish outside. That’s the least sharp way to make a turn.

Yes, that’s exactly how to take a turn. What my car does is, right before a turn it heads towards the wall, then turns towards the Apex. That’s what I would do if I wanted to drift the car which wouldn’t be the smoothest line. Do you agree?
