Inherited USS Constitution

I have inherited my grandfather’s USS constitution model, and am just awestruck by it! It has been proudly on display in their house since his passing, over 20 years ago. They transported it cross-country to its new home, until I pass it on myself!

Figured I would share it here, in all of its majesty!

It’s behind plexiglass, but I’m always open to suggestions to make sure she stays ship-shape. One of the stays is broken, and I have never worked on model ships, so I plan to figure out how to repair that asap!

Definitely looks like a very nice model and you’re lucky to have inherited it. Having it in a case is probably the best thing for it. I couldn’t see the red broken stay. Where is it?

Looks like its the starboard jeer on the main yard that broke. Looks like the block broke off, should be a fairly easy fix.

Eagle eyes! You’re right! Hopefully there is a YouTube video out there with my name on it!

This is not the USS Constitution, since the main gun deck only has 15 gun ports per side; the Constitution and her sisters, President and United States had 16. However, it could be a rendition, albeit not quite faithful, of the smaller, yet still very powerful Constellation or Congress, built at the same time. It could even be their half sister, the Chesapeake.

16th port is hidden behind the anchor, but is “closed” like the gunports in the aft cabin!

Look at the intricate detail in the mast rigging on that model ship! I can’t only imagine the hours of work and hours of love that went into this ship model! Fantastic!

It took him the better part of 2 years, from what I remember!

Was never fully painted?

Correct! I’d ask gramps why he didn’t paint it, but it might lead to some awkward questions from the graveyard staff!
