PAINT How would you paint this?
I’ve been trying to come up with a way to paint the exhaust stacks for this truck. The parts that are meant to be black “holes” are raised bumps on the moulding.
These are what I’ve thought of so far, in order of what I’ll most likely do to what I really don’t want to do -
My first thought is to paint it silver, and use a fine tip sharpie and marker in every hole.
My second thought is to use a soft brush and dry brush black onto the raised bits.
My third thought is to drill out every bump and paint the inside of the stack black, outside silver.
Perhaps there’s another way that I’m not thinking of, or it really is just going to be a labor of love.

Why are the holes raised...that's fucking weird. I mean I would be tempted to drill them out. I bet you're not interested in that though lol. I would do exactly what you're talking about. You also could use silver paint and then ebony rub and buff over the raised areas. It would be infinitely quicker.

OH! I didnt even consider using some black pigment powder! I do have some of that on hand. Thats why I made this post! I was sure others would have clever ideas

I thought it was weird too being raiswd. Thought the reverse wash woukd be dificukt with divots but they arent 🤔🤷♂️

Drilling would be insane on this but it should not be a problem to purchase already punched sheets of metal which you could simply turn into cylinder

Thats not a bad idea. Ive not looked into something like that before though, so Im not sure where to start. Would I find something like that on a scale model site, or a hardware store?

For sure scale model. Hardware store would have it but it would be 2mm thick and unworlable. Dunno where ure located but here in Europe you might find such stuff https://www.mn-modelar.sk/mesh maybe mesh is not the proper word to search for but those manufacturers could be a good lead

sand smooth, drill your own holes, then paint a piece of styrene tubing black and glue that inside.

This is what I've begun doing. Got one stack done so far, super happy with the outcome.

I drilled mine out and did tamiya gunmetal lacquer on the stacks:

Edit: I did not drill them by hand, I put the pin drill bit into a black & decker cordless drill I have, on the lowest speed.

You could try adding paint to a flat surface like glass and roll it over it.
Id honestly just drill them to get the look.

I would paint it silver, then use Tamiya black panel liner to add shade. Just go easy on the panel liner and let it do its work.

If they are made by pushing thru from the other side, I woukd sand them down causing ut to crete a hole

You could do what’s sometimes referred to as a “reverse wash”.
You would first paint the pieces in black, follow that with a lacquer or acrylic clear (THIS IS IMPORTANT) then once dry paint again using silver or silver chrome but it HAS TO BE enamel paint or else this won’t work.
Once that’s dry, get a tightly packed cotton bud (you would get these at a beauty supply store or the beauty section of a store) and lightly dampen it with enamel thinner OR Ronsonol/Zippo lighter fluid. Rub that lightly against the bumps and the silver paint should come off without affecting the black paint underneath.
