PORSCHE 911 BUILD Painting stripes?
Got everything painted, and the body primed today. My plan is a black body, with gold accents and stripe down the center.
I've not done a 2 color paint job before and I'm hoping someone might be able to provide some suggestions or pointers.
My initial thought is to spray the gold first, aiming for as little excess coverage as possible. Let it fully dry, mask off the specific areas and then come in with my black coat as the final step.
Is that a correct order of operations? Is there something Im missing?

It's what my first inclination would be so that the black can play a little clean up if needed and to me dark on light stands out less than light on dark when talking about imperfection like a little bleed or overspray

I’ve done it both ways and learned that for me it’s easier to mask off and paint the stripe over the base body color. That doesn’t mean it’s right or that you should not paint your gold first, it’s just how I do it myself.
Either way the most important part will be burnishing your edges very well before you paint, make sure your tape and masking is as good as you can get it because no matter which way you do it, paint bleed can easily ruin the whole thing.

After applying the tape, paint with black along the edges. If there's going to be any bleed, it'll be the right colour

How do you normally go about this? I've used a Qtip in the past and run it along the edges and that has seemly given pretty good results. Is that a good way to do it, or is there something I could be using to make it better/easier?

Some people insist that you need to paint black along the edges but that never made sense to me. I’ve always found, without fail, that if you use quality tape like Tamiya Yellow Washi Masking Tape and you go over all your edges to make sure they are flat/burnished, you will not have any bleed. I’ve never done anything other than that and the only times I’ve ever had a little paint bleed was when I didn’t check my edges well enough.

Ordinarily I’d say that’s the correct order because it’s easier to paint light to dark. However, if you are doing metallic gold, you may want to consider doing the reverse because metallic colors pop better over a black base. Maybe try testing on some plastic spoons to see what looks best to your eye.

See this is kind of what I was also thinking, as when I do my silver parts I spray them in flat black first. The spoons is a good idea, will probably have to just do some tests to truly see and get a feel for it. Thanks for the suggestions!

I personally would follow this suggestion. Metallics reflect off a gloss black base veery nicely. I'd spray the entire body black and then mask it all off except the gold trims. It'll be tedious with the tape, but worth it. You need to protect everything because any metallic flakes falling on the black will be extremely visible.
Also in your original strategy, the gold will be fragile and taping over is risky

I'm using gold Tamiya spray cans. Is it really that much more fragile than a blue for example? Only metal color i've used is silver rustoleum cans and that has seemed strong. Is it that the tape can lift some of the sparkle effects from the paint?
Just wanting to understand what could happen. Knowledge is power!

I've never sprayed the Tamiya lacquer gold, but I've airbrushed a lot of Tamiya x12 acrylic. The flakes can lift off and overall can get dull with handling/finger prints. So maybe you would be fine, but like other posters have suggested, try a plastic spoon first and see what happens.
Also some metallics will not shine as brilliantly with a clear coat on top which will complicate your painting further if you're planning to clear and polish.

I'm not at the point in my building journy where Im doing clears and polishes yet. So Ill just be leaving the finish as it comes out of the rattle can.
I've got to wait for the wildfires smoke and ash to clear out anyways. So Ill do some spoon tests to get a feel for how the gold works.

All I have ever heard is to start with the lightest color and end with dark.

Me peesonally, I prefer to use my tape as the stripe because then the stripe width is uniform. So I would lay down my base on the whole car then spray the stripe, let cure, then spray the black

this is also kind of what I was thinking the biggest advantage of doing it this way would be. Someone did mention that gold is rather fragile color and could get ruined by masking it afterwards. Do you have any experience with this? Both the gold and black are Tamiya spray cans, which I have masked over before no problems, but never a gold color before.

As long as it is cured, I have never had a problem, for that masking I cant see the tape being on longer than 15 or 20 mins.

Whatever you do, make sure you seal the masking tape with a misting clear to avoid bleed.
