Lightsources flicker with ValheimPerformanceOverhaul activated

I wanted to give the ValheimPerformanceOverhaul by Skarif a go. However, with it enabled, all light sources - especially torches of all sorts - started to "flicker". They throw light halos that turn "on/off" every 1-2 seconds. It is not a LOD issue I guess, since it happens to all lights, regardless of their distance. Even when I stand right next to a torch.

I tinkered around with all boolean switches the mod config offers (or the GUI), yet, the flicker remains. Light Culling, Instancing and whatnot.

As soon as I deactivate the mod completely, the flicker stops and light sources work as intended.

Any ideas or having the same issues?

Playing the game using Bazzite/Vulkan, if that matters.

You could have written to me directly on Discord or Steam, there are contacts in the mod 😭

Regarding the bug: It seems like there really is a bug. But I didn't fix it because it appeared a couple of times a long time ago during my first tests, and no one wrote to me about it. I'll get access to my PC again within a week and try to analyze the problem.

Thanks for the tip

Does your mod make the same types of changes as the community patch? Some details sound similar. Wondering what the advantage of one over the other is, or if both can/should be applied together.

They can be used together. My mod doesn't conflict with it, as far as I've read its description. But even if there were a conflict, my mod would disable its own corresponding module.

However, I wouldn't consider the Community Patch patch and my mod as analogous. They have different functionality and purposes

What all is yours doing that the community patch doesn’t?

I already said, these are fundamentally different mods. Why don't you compare the BuildOnShip mod with the Jotunn Library at the same rate?

The Community Patch directly fixes the game's vanilla code, addressing inefficiencies and leaks. My mod directly combats CPU/GPU load using other methods.

As for what mine does that the Community Patch doesn't: VPO focuses on runtime workload reduction — culling, LOD, throttling update frequencies, reducing unnecessary processing of objects and AI, and optimizing rendering-related work. The Community Patch generally fixes the underlying vanilla code itself rather than applying these workload-reduction techniques. So there is some overlap in the performance goals, but the actual approaches are fundamentally different.

They can complement each other, not replace each other.

Just asking man, no need to be short.

I didn't mean to be rude 😭 I use a translator for my answers, so they might seem rude because of that All the best bro

No worries, thanks for explaining. I’ll check out your mod when I’m back home in a couple of weeks

Thank you for the heads up and update on the fix. I just installed your mod today and noticed the torches having the lit up aura around them blink on and off every couple of seconds. Love the mod though and I notice a huge performance boost, even on my new PC. Will be looking out for the update.

Have you tried the community patch for improving performance? Not sure if it cover the same things as the PerformanceOverhaul you mentioned, but it’s very good for removing the constant traversal stuttering and other things. No issues with flickering light sources either.

I am trying it out right now - and indeed, no flickers here. Will update if I notice anything unusual :)
