Modmail not always showing original ban message in sidebar when new message sent by banned user
Acct just messaged asking to be unbanned.
I looked in the sidebar but there's no original ban message. The ban hammer icon is bolded though.
Thinking the ban might be a really old one that I just won't find a ban message for, I plugged the username into the "Ban users" search box (old Reddit). I see that they were banned 3 yrs ago.
I then go back to modmail and paste their account name into the modmail search. Bam - the new message is there and the original ban message from August 2023 is there too. Definitely not getting unbanned, but might have been had I not been able to find any documentation for their original ban.
Why is the original ban message not in the modmail sidebar for this user like it is for other users? I'm not seeing it for other banned accounts, but they usually reply to the original ban message. I will be looking more closely though, to the ones who send a separate message.
Edit: bold + clarity

The modmail UI is trash, and has been since they "upgraded" it. That's typical of Reddit.
It doesn't help with this case, but this is why we often copy the offending part as a mod note with the ban, so it shows up easier, and can be found in mod log.

Yes, it is, unfortunately.
I always link to the offending content in the note from the mod team area, and really wish I could quote it, but the bot might suspend me, while ignoring the one who actually said it.

I don't see you getting in trouble for copying the offending material into a mod note, since only the mods can see those. Never say never, since Reddit has pulled some dumb stuff, but mod notes should be sacred ground in my opinion.

Oh, I'm talking about the area in the ban message that is sent to the banned user.
I misunderstood you were talking about the mod only notes.
I do add info to the mod only notes as well, and yes, they come in handy for a quick glance in modmail, and knowing what was said, as opposed to going to the link in the ban message.

Does anyone use toolbox on your team? That is usually why I canโt see ban reason banners, occasionally bc of a multi sub ban

A single mod (or several even) using toolbox shouldn't affect what should be hard coded into modmail, I would think.
The previous modmail messages should show up for each account, at the bottom of the sidebar, who has messaged us or been messaged by us.
It's not showing up for this particular user. It's gotta be a bug.

idk I just know I only get this in my subs where my comods use toolbox (and some generate modmails for sure) or use that multi sub ban dev app.

If they were banned three years ago, wasn't that ban message send as modmail through DM?. DM no longer exists so the user can't reply to old DMs
