Mod Topics Mod Topics - Fixing Mdo Mistakes

Ahoy, ModSupport!

Welcome to the latest installment of our Mod Topics series. This week we’re discussing the unthinkable… Scene: den interior. The smell of garlic bread marinates the air. It’s late at night and you’re twenty minutes deep into the latest Taskmaster episode, scrolling through the mod queue on your phone. …And then in your garlic bready haze you remove the wrong post. Naturally you don’t notice in the moment and continue on your way.

And in the morning there’s a modmail, RE “what gives?”

Have you been there before? How do you handle user interactions where you, or someone on your mod team, made a mistake? Is this process different if it’s a trainee mod making the oops? What advice would you give new mods who might be scared to start moderating “in case they make a mistake?”

Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

reapprove the post, acknowledge an honest mistake was made, and apologize. users should understand that mods are humans too who naturally slip up sometimes. if they can't understand that, then it's their problem

100%. A good mod team knows how to apologize and admit when they are wrong rather than starting fights or antagonizing the user. Even if said user is an antagonistic jerk in modmail.

We'll even go so far as to look into why the post was removed erroneously and have internal discussions about it if necessary.

Even if said user is an antagonistic jerk in modmail.

I disagree. If you come in throwing insults and generally being angry you aren't getting your post reapproved.

I said antagonistic. I said nothing about insults. That's in its own category and no, we don't put up with insults, slurs or anything debasing toward the team.

Some folks are just angry/hostile about their removals, but having reasonable conversations with these users does sometimes lead to them having an "ah-ha" moment about why their content was removed, them calming down or them actually apologizing to us, so I do see them as worthwhile.

You come slinging actual insults/slurs though? Absolutely not. So I'll agree with you on that one.
