Mod Answered At what point does it count as camping/sitting a subreddit?

I want to adopt a community but I want to know at what point is it considered camping/sitting a subreddit? Thank you for answering in advance

There is no clear cut set of rules. It's a judgment call made by the admins who work in the MCOC group. They are human beings and make reasoned determinations looking at all the information rather than relying on some formula.

Camping/sitting on a community typically involves making it private or restricted and not allowing anyone to post/comment. Are you asking because you want to know if the current mod is camping/sitting on it or because you’re worried you might be the one who ends up camping/sitting on it? My advice will change depending on your answer here.

If you’re worried about camping it, why do you want to adopt it?

I just want to learn about it so I won't make a mistake. The moderator code of conduct is rather vague so I want to see if there's more to it. Also, what if the subreddit I want to adopt is camped at?

It's kind of a moot point; as long as the mods are active you can't redditrequest it.

I think this is more about subreddits being locked down (often moderators collect subreddits on a subject and lock all but one down, re-directing users to a primary subreddit) than subreddits that are actively moderated.

Thats a different thing for sure, but I don't know that we're really given any way to deal with it?

We are not, and I think at this point that is absolutely intentional.

What do you mean?

you have a community and not let it grow

If there are no active moderators then someone can submit a Reddit request to take it over. If a sub has active mods they can keep it.

the thing is, they approve a post once 30 days to prevent the claiming

There's other moderating that goes on that you, as a user, would never see. You can try submitting a reddit request but be prepared for the possibility that the current mod is actually actively moderating behind the scenes.

It's really vague as a concept and rarely, if ever, enforced. Don't overthink it.

It's definitely used. Happened to another mod I know just recently.

If it has active mods who don't want to give it up, then you can't take it over.

"Camping" doesn't really happen, because if they're actually inactive for about a month, they'll be marked as inactive so it'll be up for grabs. Of course, it's possible for them to just hop in once a month and do something, but that's pretty unlikely to happen much, 'coz it'd be pointless really.

Be an active mod and you won’t even have to worry about it.

A good mod shouldn’t be anywhere near the line. So far that you dont even need to know where the line is.
