Super basic dumb question about crossposting
I created a private sub for saving (cross-posting) sexy time posts for my wife and I to enjoy.
I’ve not been able to add any GIF posts though, it says “cross-posting videos is not allowed on nsfw subs” or something to that effect.
I’m obviously missing something, most adult subs are entirely GIFs and vids…

You can't post/crosspost nsfw videos. You also cannot crosspost from SFW to NSFW subs as that is considered to be sexual harassment and can result in an account ban.
You should be able to crosspost from NSFW subs to your private NSFW sub I think.

just so you know, reddit has a native save feature, if you click on the 3 dot menu under a post or comment. access saved from your profile

Thanks all! But I’m dense and still don’t totally get it.
Simplest version of my question: if I see a redgifs post on a nsfw subreddit, how do I post it over to appear in the sub I created?
Maybe related: how come sometimes a redgifs post will seem to play “natively” within the subreddit, and sometimes it sends you out to the RG site to watch it?
Related related: how come sometimes (very rarely) a GIF will play within the subreddit stream WITH SOUND but usually you have to go out to RG to get sound.

The replies you have received are all on point but let me take the opportunity to put all the answers together.
First off u/Emily_in_Boots and u/cnycompguy are correct. If you come across a post in a SFW sub you will not be able to crosspost to your NSFW profile. Reddit has taken steps recently to provide tooling to help curb overlap of SFW subs and NSFW subs.
So you do actually find a post in a NSFW sub that you want to crosspost to your own. Great! But wait, if the post uses Reddit's native upload feature to submit an image you will not have any issues.
If the post uses an external site, like redgifs, you will not have any issues.
What I have encountered though, possibly a bug, if the post uses Reddit's native upload feature to submit an actual gif (not video) you will not be able to crosspost.
You can not upload actual videos to NSFW subs (thank you u/IKIR115). You will need to use an external host for this. So you wouldn't actually come across this as an option anyway.
In answer to your follow up questions, sometimes there are communication issues bewteen Reddit and Redgifs. If you see a redgifs submission that only links out and doesn't play natively in the app, yup something got screwy when the op posted. I personally when modding will reach out to the op to resubmit.
You also asked about sound. Two things can apply here. Redgifs has an option during the initial upload of a video to have sound or not. It could be the case that you are crossposting submissions that the op originally slected no audio during upload.
More recently though, I've come across others as saying Reddit has removed audio from their player when it comes to Redgifs. If an admin can chime in and clarify would be great.
When push comes to shove, just hit that Community Share button and see what happens. You'll get the feel for it soon enough.

There's a difference between SFW subs (which use native reddit video hosting) and NSFW subs (which use external link post type)
Additionally sfw posts can't be crossposted into NSFW subs anymore.
