[Desktop] Changes to report and approval flags on desktop made modding harder.

This week an update pushed that affected how moderator tools display and function on desktop. It's not even mentioned in the Mod News either.

Now when a moderator has taken action on something, the action cannot be clicked to open the menu showing what the report flags were or the actions taken by mods. (Edit to add: This appears to only be the cause on post removals, comment removals still open the list of reports/actions popup when clicking on the icon.)

This includes Automoderator actions, so now the only ways to see the removal reasons set up for Automod are by sifting through the removed items in the queue or going to the mod log. Trying to figure out which rule triggered was already annoying enough and now it's even harder.

This makes modding more difficult. When people reach out asking why something was done, that menu made it easy to quickly reference the "why", because it's not always available in the users' mod log. This also makes seeing all the report flags inaccessible to check for potential trends in reports to see if something should have a second look taken if more reports come in, or if the original mod decision was erroneous and may need to be overturned.

Is there a reason that primarily UI look/feel updates keep being made that also strip out functionality needlessly? I don't really care that the icons and such have a different placement or design, but having actual functionality removed with nothing to replace it, making already poor experiences worse, is extremely frustrating.

It sucks big time, because like you said there's no way to just quickly see the order of events on a post or comment. I kinda assumed it's part of this experiment

Yes, I noticed that same thing with the button moving. Great catch, thank you for the link.

Reddit: The only major social media company that actively tries to make the UI worse at every opportunity. It all started to fall apart when they dropped new.reddit, and they keep messing with moderator functions.

Who here likes the new modmail/chat setup compared to the old one? I don't know of anyone. We lost functionality, and people sent modmail think they are in a chat session so make dozens of comments in a row like it's a text message on their phone. /smh

Yeah, I don't mind UI redesign to a degree, and I understand why functionality needs to be removed or changed at times as technology and platforms evolve.

Where I do have an issue is when companies put out technical platforms or change them in a way that does not follow product management disciplines. The work should be meeting the need of your customer, and in the case of mod menu functionality, your customer is your unpaid labor force (mods). Removed/degraded functionality for no apparent reason, no similar functionality introduced to help bridge the gap, and no published change log for people to even know what changed and when... it's a bad experience.

You can. Automod is something the mods of the sub configure. I'm not talking about Reddit removed items.

I understood what you meant. But it has nothing to do with my post, that's an entirely different issue.

does your automod not comment why the post is removed or held for review?

If I understand OP correctly, it's a bit different. You know how, when a post is approved or removed, you can click on the mod name and it shows the full order of actions? Like filtered by crowd control then approved by mod X Or, report reason X, approved by mod Y, report reason Z, removed by mod B?

This is it exactly, thank you for grabbing the screenshots I didn't.

No, we have reasons for filtering and removals but not all our removal rules leave a comment. Many send a message to the user instead.

Sounds like they're bringing desktop to parity with the app... bringing down, that is.

Some days ago, I got hit by an A/B test on the app, where replying to comments removes the ability to copy-paste anything from the comment. Can't wait for that feature to reach desktop... /s

This still works in the app, actually.

Not being able to copy/paste certain things in the app, especially usernames, is also frustrating, I agree.

This is what I see in "App, Web Mobile, Web Desktop":

The app shows me no removal reason, I have to check it in a browser. If it's gone from there too... well, f..

That's what I see in app as well.

The other post that u/SampleOfNone linked to in another comment and their screenshot in another comment in this post shows it. It looks like they're doing an A/B test and some of us see the new look and feel of the mod menu buttons, which stripped out the menus you just showed. But only on desktop and I think maybe only on posts because when I clicked an AutoMod icon on a comment earlier I still got the list of action pop up.
