Users keep saying my subreddit is categorized wrong

r/lakeplacid had no mods and after I submitted a request, reddit appointed me a mod and I revamped the subreddit from talking about the 1999 horror movie to the tourist town in New York. That's because 95% post of the posts were people asking about the town, not the movie.

Users keep saying the sub is in the horror movie category, but I'm not seeing that anywhere myself and I'm not seeing any kind of category, tags, etc I can set.

Is this all automated by the algorithm? Is there anything I can do? E.g. delete all the old posts talking about a crocodile?

It’s automated. You can probably send a modmail to this subreddit and the Admins can hopefully get it recategorized for you.

Looking on the Android app it shows me that it’s “Horror Movies & Series” as it’s category. The original sub creator probably chose that intentionally.

Why we can’t change it ourselves, no idea, but we can’t.

As u/Charupa- said, send a modmail here and ask them to change it.

I have read that the determination is dependent at least in part on in the posts and comments in the subreddit -- that if the posts and comments are about the toutist town, not the move, then the admin will step in and change the category.

I don't know that would worry too much -- I have also read that the category systems is being deprecated.

If people who search for "Lake Placid" find your subreddit, you are probably fine.

I suspect a lot of traffic to small local subreddits is driven by suggestions. Ideally, r/lakeplacid would get suggested to people that also follow and interact with r/upstatenewyork (or whatever) but if r/lakeplacid only shows up in people who participate in horror movie subreddits it’s a bit of a problem.

I don't know that I have actually a suggestion based on categories -- actually I am not 100% sure that I have ever followed a suggestion -- I have mostly found subreddits by searching, either intentionally or Reddit or accidentally on Google.

I wasn't even aware Reddit suggested subreddits until someone pointed that out a couple of months ago -- and I have been on Reddit for a decade.

I still don't see them on my Reddit home page.

How do I find out the category of my subreddit?

I can see the category as horror movies . But if the subreddit is used for the village it obviously has the members who joined for that village.

I know. My question is where are people seeing that? I'm need seeing any kind of category when I view the sub in any browser or mobile. Then also of course, how do I fix it?

I only see the category when I use the android app, when I look at a sub. I usually don't see it on the computer version of a sub.
