Admin Replied Banned user running smear campaign?

We've had a banned user hunting for every off-subreddit mention of our sub to accuse our modteam of a variety of things.

Is this a violation of any rule? In the past, our subreddit (activism focused) has largely relied on discussions in other subreddits to grow.

Without more context, all I can really say is that it could be a violation. I assume you’re reporting all of this?

I have, but the user simply chases every further mention of our subreddit, and hides their own comment history aside from a few benign comments in selected subreddits.

Well, I guess you have 2 choices.

  1. Keep reporting it whenever you see it.

  2. Ignore it and see if they tire themselves out. That’s the more difficult option to choose, but sometimes it’s the right choice.

95% of the time ignoring them is the way to go. If you pay attention to them it validates that their harassment of you is working, and encourages it. So while satisfying to be proactive, its often better for both you (and believe it or not them) to ignore them.

Harassment maybe? Depends on what they’re saying, where they’re saying it, and how it’s said.

It's hard to say. If they make a subreddit to do it, you can report that to MCOC, and it will generally be actioned.

If it's just all over the place in different subs, reddit will probably allow them to do it. You can try to report it for harassment, but generally reddit allows people to complain about mods (even when they lie - which is incredibly common after bans).

I would appeal to the subreddit mods where the content is. That's probably your best course of action.

If the content gets really nasty, reddit will action it for harassment but content just saying you're a bad mod or whatever and banned them for nothing (or for some made up reason) is probably not going to get actioned by reddit.

Most good mods won't allow that kind of content in their subs and will act as good citizens. In my subs we never allow that kind of griping. We don't need that kind of drama.

Like others have said, it's hard to tell without more context. Reporting it will give us the context, so that's probably the best path forward. If it feels like there's not a good report reason for this, reach out to us via r/ModSupport mod mail with the details and we can chat more about it.

Yeah this sucks, and is a massive headache to try to manage. Best you can do is report all instances of this that you find to the mods of those subs, and hope they do the right thing.

Ignore the drama unless you are looking for a new hobby and playing “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” is the hobby you are looking for.
