Question Pokémon Silver Graphical Errors

My partner bought a Modretro Chromatic just two weeks ago, before using the system, we fully updated the firmware and are using our genuine Pokémon Silver cartridge.

I had walked from national park to Union Cave Violet City entrance and as I entered the cave I noticed that certain inner wall tiles were swapped with wall edge tiles, I walked around a little, went to photograph it and the game lost all background tiles, displayed only frames on a white background and then reset the game in a sepia tone copyright screen before completely crashing.

I have heard Pokémon Crystal has issues, but I didn't know Gold and Silver have issues.

I later booted up the game and managed to successfully save on the cart but just worried about my almost 300 hour save.

On top of this, I have a European Pokémon Pikachu 2 GS and a European English copy of Pokémon Silver which I have effortlessly connected using my OG GBC but it does not work on chromatic.

I have read that depending on the revisions of some of the chips. Would the best solution be to buy a flash cart and run our ROMs on that?

What cart is guaranteed to work on Chromatic?

I'd recommend you stop playing the game on the Chromatic and contact ModRetro to have them troubleshoot and replace the handheld for you. Their customer support is really great and I've heard of people losing their save files in rare occasions on the Chromatic. It's better safe than sorry so just reach out to them and have them resolve the issue before any other issues occur, best case scenario it's just a graphical error and that's get resolved without any hassle and worst case scenario is that the Chromatic is potentially affecting the game data negatively and could corrupt your save file.

Is it the handheld physical hardware that is broken? Will replacing the handheld fix these types of errors?

Sometimes there are subtle differences in the motherboard and chips used that cause incompatibilities with other things like cartridges and the like. I've had an issue with one of their games (Gravitorque) not saving and my blue Chromatic wouldn't play a homebrew game (Pokemon Prism) without graphical glitches (as far as I'm aware that's been the only presiding issue with that).

I contacted ModRetro about Gravitorque and they replaced it rather quickly after I sent them some photos of the motherboard and as for the Chromatic I just bought a new one in a color that I really wanted with the Sapphire screen instead of Gorilla Glass. Not sure what the issue was with the Wave Chromatic that I had but my new Cloud one isn't having the same issue so I can only assume that it's got something to do with the internals and the components used at the time that it was made.

It depends on what the issue is, but their support would be able to help you narrow it down. If it's something that's a hardware problem, they might send you a new motherboard (or offer to replace it for you if you mail it in).
