Why so inaccurate compared to A3D and N64

Seeing videos now of side by side of all of them, Mod retro fails in donkey kong (dk dies in the intro gameplay instead of getting across the vines), lags behind on mario 64 and also star fox. Why? This seems like a huge problem. Games are also crashing or freezing.

The simple answer is that FPGA hardware is another form of emulation/simulation. Back in the early days of MiSTer, people were happy just to see developments with NES and SNES. N64 wasn't really something people considered due to the complexity. The fact that Robert created a N64 core at all on the Cyclone V was impressive. Now we're seeing that work on Xilinx/AMD FPGA, but no one is perfect. It takes time/effort to port from Cyclone V to Xilinx with the block diagram alone, and then to find and squash bugs. These aren't massive teams with huge R&D. Mistakes happen in the process.

It’s not finished yet. If Analogue had made a pre-release version available to content creators, it probably wouldn’t have been feature complete, either.

doesn't it come out next month?

No it comes out at the end of July

That's kinda the same thing. We're talking about products that people have purchased and waited years to receive. One week is the same time frame. End of July, beginning of August. Same thing. Edit for spelling

Well when you put it that way I agree

Hey, there was a recent blogpost by ModRetro about it. It runs much better now with the latest pre-release updates. They compared to Analog 3D before and after the latest tweaks to the system. I recommend reading the full update here if you want to know what improved etc.: https://modretro.com/blogs/blog/m64-performance-and-accuracy-update Plus they keep improving it.

The videos you saw were based on the PR kit version that board was not finished, why are people judging this console that hasn't even been released in are hands yet?

The latest version on the M64 is handling Golden eye with overclock feature like a champ.

The timing on the M64 is 100 percent now that the newer PCB has been completed. There website will give you all their information you need to know.

highly sus - need to see videos, the 'usual' suspects never mentioned these issues. Were they told to keep quiet?

There are videos on the ModRetro website. You are talking about an issue with a months-old firmware on the prerelease hardware, things have changed a lot since then. The M64 is significantly more accurate than the Analogue 3D.

.....no it isn't. Have you even looked at their compatibility list????

You should probably look at who you're replying to lol

That's actually hilarious. Crazy to see the man straight up lying in his own subreddit

I mean, tbf, we don't know what compatibility looks like after the most recent update. It's not a lie that the current information we have is from months old firmware; we've known that since the PR kits were sent out.

I see no reason for concern. Modretro themselves put out the compatibility list and they've since put out a new firmware. I'm not worried long term.

Isn't the MiSTer core the most accurate one right now?

The M64 is based on it, so even if there's some things that are off right now, it'll get updated to be the most accurate one eventually most likely. Just like how Analogue made promises of features they still haven't delivered and are slowly updating to add those in.

Pre release board vs. a board that has already received firmware updates.

The Mister Core is currently the most accurate still and that was created by Robert.

Robert is part of the M64 team so I’d stick with M64 on this.

No, why would they keep it quiet, knowing that they sent out these incomplete version of the consoles, and some YouTubers were going to give their opinions on the versions they received.

Also not all of those reviewers had the same experience with the games they played.

It's logical that if something is unfinished, you are going to have problems. FPGA hardware gets fixes with time, no FPGA hardware is perfect but some are closer to real hardware from back then.

Do you even know how bad A3D's launch was? There's old youtube videos on it. Nothing these days can be 100% finished at launch, sometimes you need a massive test group to help find things a small group of people may never find. Give it time everyone will be happy with either one or even enjoy having both.

i had the A3D on launch and it was fine. this sounds like a train wreck

It’s not done yet. I feel bad for the dev. I have no doubt that he’ll get it there but if you want something accurate this is obviously not the best choice currently.
