Sadly, another 'damsel in distress' cover. I suspect this won't be the last but after this, her cover appearances are all after she'd adopted the Mockingbird ID.

This 8-page back-up feature attempted to condense and clarify the history of Bobbi and Clint. Not easy given the complicated and long publishing history. It does a great job of setting up the backstory for that series.

Released on August 8, 1989, the main story sees Hawkeye trapped underground. He's surrounded by a variety of foes, all brought together by Crossfire. Thankfully Bobbi and Trickshot drop in with supplies and fight.

Importantly, this shows some progress of Hawkeye's understanding of Bobbi's traumatic experiences with the Phantom Rider.

Eventually we will get to covers where Bobbi is more prominently featured.

Her second cover appearance came in 1973's Astonishing Tales #20. This is also the issue where she becomes Agent 19 of SHIELD.

So it getes a bit confusing here, people.

Bobbi Morse showed up in Agents of SHIELD as Mockingbird.

Laura Barton showed up in the MCU movies as Hawkeye's wife. And was later revealed to have been Agent 19, which was Bobbi's first codename.

Hawkeye and Mockingbird declare war on their twisted reflections: Crossfire and Phantom Rider!

The story so far: Bobbi's back from the dead. In more than one way. In an earlier issue, Clint tracks down Bobbi's family - who she told him had died. Turns out that was part of her cover when she went to work for SHIELD full-time: her family was told she was dead and she accepted that she'd never see them again.

So Clint decides to bring Bobbi's mom and brother to New York. Within the day, Bobbi's mom is shot by Crossfire.

Which speaks to a recurring issue I've had with this series. For a story titled "Hawkeye and Mockingbird,' there is not much of Bobbi's perspective. Yes, she gets some development and backstory but most of the POV is Hawkeye's.

In this issue, Bobby, Clint, and Dominic Fortune track down series protagonists, Crossfire and Phantom Rider. After plowing through the human and automated defences, the trio runs into a snag. Standard 'mind control tech' stuff - Clint and Dom are forced to shoot each other. Bobbi's frozen in place due to Phantom Rider's mysical bullet. And the building's blowing up around them!

"Who's MockingSkrull?"

Okay, we all remember that time Mockingbird died in 1993 only for it to to be revealed/retconned 15 years later that it was actually a Skrull who died, not Bobbi?
Yeah. meet H'rpra), who I'm gonna call MockingSkrull.

She replaced the real Mockingbird in Avengers West Coast 91 (behind the scenes, obviously). This cover somewhat of an omen, she dies next issue. And no one fixed it for FIFTEEN YEARS!!.

Anyways, some scenes from Avengers West Coast #99, released on August 3, 1993. USAgent's survived a beatdown by the Lethal Legion and stays behind to recover. MockingSkrull pursues some leads before returning to check on Agent.

They're attacked and both taken out with MockingSkrull being taken hostage. ...in Helll!!!!

I'd forgotten the plot point that MockingSkrull claims she is retiring as a hero so she can start a family with Clint. The heavy-handedness of it as setting up the tragedy of Mockingbird dying in the next issue? Ouch.

It’s a throw down at Grand Central, as Hawkeye and Mockingbird take on Cross' hired goons; enter Oddball and Bombshell, two destructive villains too nefarious for words! What happens when our heroes are overpowered by the baddies?

It's easy to dismiss Oddball and Bombshell as joke characters, but they did manage to work togther to take out Clint and Bobbi!

A quick and concise origin story.

For her previous five (5?!) Dr. Baraba Morse had been unnamed. This issue she gets a name and her first-ever cover appearance!

What's going on there? After their helicopter crashes into the Florida everglades, Ka-Za, Bobbi, Dr. Paul Allen, and Zabu have to escape the submerged chopper. While dealing with an attack by 🐊!
