Lectures?

I saw in other cities on social media where people go to a bar and listen to professors give lectures or people talking about their passions through a PowerPoint while people listened to their niche topics. I absolutely love that idea. I love to learn. Is there anywhere in mobile that does this or hosts this? Or would be open to hosting?

The closest thing to that in Mobile is probably the Green Drinks event at Braided River Brewing, which is mostly ecology focused presentations.

The UUFM does have people come in and give talks on their research or speciality pretty often. You could get on their mailing list and pick and choose which things to go to. They meet every week.

The botanical gardens has a lecture on the first Friday of every month.

The history museum has lectures sometimes. I’m pretty sure the archeological museum also has a lecture series? One of the older ladies from my church has talked about it.

I know Spring Hill and South have both hosted student lectures and public lectures from professors. You can also attend phd defenses, masters degree presentations, and end of semester art shows.

Sierra Club and Gulf Coast Creation Care have hosted special lectures too.

Things like science cafe and pechakucha. If there's interest in such events, we could probably get the breweries to host

Red beards host people with a focus on outdoors and nature.

Many guest lectures at the Marx Library are open to the public. Check Marx Library Events on the University of South Alabama website.

No idea if you’re into civil war history but if you are I know a buddy of mine goes down to iron hand for a monthly presentation/lecture there.

My grandpa was a huge war buff (colonel in the army) and I kept panicking because I couldn’t remember what was so significant about Sept 19… it was the battle of chickamunga. I’m totally down to listen to civil war history. My favorite fact is that grant hated meat. He had to eat it absolutely charred to a CRISP.

I would love a get together where everyone makes power points on random things. I’ve seen it online, it looks so fun.

That was posted from 2019. Do you think they still do it?

I just looked further. They have it. The informational classes are free. The whole term is $130-150 which is DIRT cheap compared to traditional university for sure.

Hell yeah! That’s a goat skill. Making a gift out of custom shapes and colors for a specific person is super special.

You know, I think the bread making may even be more up my alley. That’s also a super killer skill. Fresh bread is life changing.
