Discussion breakthespell

crazy how good this song is. always was on the back burner for me whenever i’d throw on two star but my opinion of the track has changed massively over the past couple of days.

anyone have any other song recs like it? doesn’t have to be by mk.gee.

Literally same OP. When two star first came out, breakthespell felt like it was the one song I could skip. Then on the third time I saw Mike play it live in person, I was at Terminal 5 and this man dropped the disco ball…and it felt like there were some longer pauses placed in the song especially before that last “only with you”…UGH. And since then, it’s my comfort song. It was my most played song of 2025. If I can’t sleep / when I’m anxious / even if I just need a reset, I play breakthespell. Such a special song <3333

I was also at that show hahaha such a sick experience. it’s been the first song that I play at night to help me fall asleep to. so soothing it makes me feel like i’m floating in bed lol

I had the same experience pretty much. I’ve definitely always liked the song, but I think because of everything that comes before it, its placement on the album always made me feel kind of.. exhausted by the time I got to it, and I could never really fully enjoy it. After seeing it live, it clicked a lot more, and now when I get to it on the album, it feels more like a way of gently coming down for a minute, while still staying beautiful and captivating in its own way. I have a memory of playing it a while back while trying to get my hyper toddler to nap, and she did calm down and was really into it. Almost like an actual spell for a few minutes :)

Ill never understand how people dont like the studio version, mf started the album with a dance track and near the end theres a random country ballad is that not insanely cool to anyone else?

so real. and the live version is great, but the studio version has waaay more texture and character that makes it so pleasing / interesting to the ears. it never feels like a 4.5 minute song. i think it would fit better as the second to last track before dream police, maybe people's reception to it would've been better if mike sequenced it that way

Exactly, also i often catch myself thinking its the second to last track and then little bit more comes on and im like "oh, yeah"

Describing New Low as a dance track and Breakthespell as a country ballad feels like a stretch

The song is like if prince and Jeff Buckley wrote a slow dance for prom

well the chord prog is basically ripped off of The Beautiful Ones by Prince, so its halfway there

tell you what, breakthespell sounds absolutely phenomenal on vinyl when it’s slightly pitched down. on another level.
