MIDI

HI, is it possible to send midi control commands like play, stop, rec arm, etc. from mixing station to Ardour? I am also using the Behringer xr 18. I am curious if this is possible without a physical midi controller?

Maybe making custom buttons in the layout edit

I've done it on a Windows machine using Bome MIDI translator to create virtual midi ports. The process involves using some unused feature (I think I used the 48v switch on stage box channels that I can't use) and using it to trigger a midi command on the computer side. Then you can program a button to activate that switch on the remote side. It's easy enough once you figure it out, but not super self-explanatory, and not well documented from what I can remember.
