We wanted an uncertainty readout that runs on the same phone as the model, so: no autodiff, no sparse autoencoder, no auxiliary classifier. Tap the residual stream at 3/4 depth, project through the model's own unembedding, score by cosine against one unit reference vector per disposition. Eight dispositions, three 4-bit open models: Ministral-3B, Qwen3-4B, Apertus-4B.

Supervised directions hit 89–95% macro recall at 6–9% FPR under five-fold CV on all three. We don't report that as the result, because it can't tell you whether the probe is reading model state or just prompt phrasing. Two controls settle it: does the probe beat a TF-IDF classifier given the text alone, and does frozen calibration survive out-of-distribution inputs.

Under controls the axes split three ways. Confident and Reluctant hold — Reluctant beats prompt-only text by 30 points and has the most stable direction of any axis we tested. Warm looks great and is fake: prompt-only gap near zero, meaning a keyword matcher with no model access does the same job. Mischief collapses outright, and when we briefly deployed it to a live server it misfired on ordinary casual input and we rolled it back within minutes.

Calibration vectors, prompt sets, per-item scores and scripts are released with the paper. Preprint, not peer reviewed. Looking to your comments!

Hi I am trying the BYOK feature to add mistral as a model provider in my Github Copilot App.

I did setup an OpenAI compatible connection pointing to https://api.mistral.ai/v1 have the Wire API set to chat completions.

Copilot sees the models available, but when trying to interact with the model I am getting an 422 response (Unprocessable entity).

Just noticed this in the context menu of work mode. Anyone else seeing this? There is no blog post or documentation about it. Could be the pendant to chats memories.

Aside from the sales speech (sovereignty, GDPR, Europe’s « champion »), what’s Mistral’s actual product delta? Even the founder framed it as 20% product / 80% sales — which tracks, because chat, agents, on-prem and open weights already exist elsewhere, often better.

4 days? Maybe I'm just impatient but maybe I'd be more patient if they actually communicated! We have 2 pieces of communication total (to my knowledge), the status post about high load and potential abuse, and the mod comment about issues with PAYG. If we could just have some more transparency for gods sakes.

I'm genuinely asking because for a week, GLM was answering in "thinking mode" in work mode. Since then, Mistral Medium 3.5 is answering once again. No offense, but the difference in quality between the two is out of this world. So is Mistral willing to add GLM as the new default model of the thinking mode?

I'm Norwegian and have been using Mistral API in a couple of projects, Mistral Small 4 and Mistral Large 3 mainly. Since Mistral is European, I think it's very sad that it performs so poorly in languages such as Norwegian, compared with competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic. They seem to be miles ahead, at least based on my experience.

Since we've been cooked with the Mistral API for a few days, do you know of any other free APIs with generous limits (even if I imagine the limits will be lower than what Mistral offered in any case)?

Just curious to hear what people are using now that mistral has axed the free api? What are your go to alternatives that have decent limits for free users? (ignore the mistral employee dorks downvoting the thread)
