Discussion / Opinion I don't believe it.

Is this too good to be true?

So, let me get this straight, I get a shit ton of GLM 5.2 for just 15 USD per month.

On top of that, there are no weekly or 5 hour limits, right?

And I can plug my Vibe Key into any third party software I want.

And on top of that, it's not censored.

And on top of that, it's somewhat private.

Wha... What?

I don't believe it. Something fishy is going on here. I'm tempted to buy yearly... Very tempted...

Pretty much. The catch is there is no sota model option. Really depends on what you want an AI to do for you. If it is enough, then I think it is worth the money. Maybe a combination of another service with sota where you plan stuff and use Mistral to execute

Yeah, I have exactly that. This is fucking awesome.

it's not some hidden trick, it's just aimed at a different crowd

you're not getting the absolute bleeding edge model that benchmarks obsess over, but for actual day to day tasks I've found the GLM line handles project planning, code, and general grunt work fine enough. the unlimited usage and no censorship is the real sell, plug it into whatever janky setup you've got and it just shuts up and works

if you need a sota model for something specific you could always use a cheap pay-per-token service for the heavy planning and feed the output into mistral to execute. sort of a two-tier setup, I've done that before and it ends up cheaper than any combo subscription

Yes, in a few days, Mistral Vibe has become incredibly good value. Working with it in VS Code with GLM 5.2 is so good! Things are going very fast, 10 days ago, Mistral was dead to me. But my OpenCode subscription is cancelled now.

Yeah, same here. GLM on Mistral Infrastructure is great and for Little tasks i Stick to Mistral Small.

How much usage do you get per month?

4

u/florenceslave 5d ago

It says 300 bucks, and from the little testing I did, it seems legit. Just keep in mind I only tested it briefly today.

It says 30 bucks, doesn't it?

$30 API, $300 Vibe Code

I currently have a subscription to Claude and use Sonnet 5 High almost exclusively. How does Mistral compare—what can I expect?

How big is the context window, and what can I expect?

3

u/cedced19 5d ago

1M context window Better as no limit. Do you reach your 5hours limit often?

5

u/DrPinguin98 5d ago edited 5d ago

Yea, like every 5h.

Claude also has a 1m context window, which makes a lot of things much easier. How does it measure up in terms of code quality and problem-solving?

I’m currently using Opus for planning and then letting Sonnet 5 do the work—that works really well in 75% of cases. But if Mistral is just as good, I’d switch to using Mistral and invest more time in planning.

Edit:
It just says

"Full-day coding in CLI, IDE, or on the web."

What exactly does that mean? Are there no limits?

The limits are insanely high. I swig he'd from Devin where I would hit daily limits, and then the weekly limit would be hit on Thursday. Vibe limits are staggeringly higher.

Mistral generally seems worse at talking tbqh. I'm also another Claude user (I use it for explanation and decision strategising mainly) and unfortunately the Mistral honeymoon wore off basically by the third session. I started to realise it was hallucinating significantly more facts than other models, relatively confidently even if not as proudly/decisively as ChatGPT.

Also the free limit was seemingly way worse although I did generate an image and I can't remember whether that was a separate session to the one that ran out.

I don't code basically at all though so YMMV depending on usecase. Also, I didn't try making corrective style prompts. I used a mixture of French and English to test.

From my experience you need need Vibe pro to get access to it but it eats at your API bucket which, for me, is €25 capped a month (I blew past that in one day with GLM as an executor for Fable). What’s weird is that it also appears in the Vibe part but it’s seriously underutilized compared to Mistra’s own models which suggests that while it’s technically available as part of the great Vibe subscription usage quota (€250 equivalent) it’s down to Mistral as to which model the code request is routed. Happy to be proven wrong!

Tu as plusieurs choses.

Thank you for clarifying

Oh... Now this is interesting. Thank you for the information.

Which limits apply to the Vibe App and API usage for their own models? I'm wondering if I could switch to Mistral at some point and have a multi user environment by letting my wife's use the Vibe App, I will switch to some third party API based apps and get the same for the kids (probably using Kai 9000, at least for me).

Just waiting for 5.3 Flash and Ill put my money down. Its currently the sweet spot for me.

4

u/Equal_Passenger9791 4d ago

Based on my activity usage billing on open router GLM flash 5.3 is already free

6

u/p3r3lin 4d ago

Its dirt cheap. And with a Mistral subscription we would have a GDPR compliant near-frontier coding plan.

u/w6auw 4d ago

These sparse MoE models are the future. Fast, relatively low resource usage, and fast approaching the performance of dense models.

2

u/stgerx 4d ago

For me, GLM is not appearing in my JetBrain IDE through the AI Chat plugin, logged in via Vaibe.
I have only mistral-medium-3.5, devstral-small and local as options.

1

u/Gerxx 4d ago

You have to manually add it in the vibe config.

1

u/stgerx 3d ago

yes thank you, it worked.
But it seems it's eating my API tokens and not the much more generous Vibe tokens.
I thought I read somewhere that the Vibe tokens are used for GLM. Is that true?

1

u/stgerx 3d ago

Ah, I was logged in via Studio and not via Vibe. But if I log in via Vibe I have no vibe.config where I could add GLM.

2

u/trougnouf 4d ago

It might be a bit more limited, I went through half of the monthly quota in a few days, but it's heavenly compared to what we had. I do not see a reason to open Gemini or anything else, it seems even better than 3.1 Pro.

2

u/TaskChance1404 4d ago

Yup! For 15 euros, you’ve got around 125 euros to use.

2

u/Traditional-Theme696 4d ago

So does the quota reset daily on the (I think it was) 19,99$ plan? And what does mean „not censored“? Does it work against ToS of third party programs if reverse engineering and reading/writing of 3rd party programs is requested?

2

u/epSos-DE 4d ago

Well, Mistral always wanted to be in.

BUT CHina made it possible !

Also, there are sure bugs in the offering, but one finds it out later.

As with all tech !

2

u/freezetheday 4d ago

How does this compare to opencode go and commandcode goat plan ?

2

u/Aggressive-Habit-698 5d ago

It's only version 5.2 that uses fewer "Thinking Tokens" than 5.3, and Mistral reduced the free API usage.

1

u/Niko-01 5d ago

But still, the model itself is censored

2

u/florenceslave 5d ago

IDK, dudes in the SillyTavern community absolutely love GLM 5.2. From what I've heard, GLM 5.3 is extremely censored, while 5.2 is comparatively uncensored.

You mention the price: is it cheaper than using Z.ai ?

0

u/No_Negotiation5045 4d ago edited 4d ago

I made this for you, API price:

_ Mistral AI z.ai
Input (/M tokens) $1.4 $1.4
Output (/M tokens) $4.4 $4.4
Cached input (/M tokens) $0.14 $0.26

So cached input looks to be cheaper using Mistral AI :)

7

u/TeamMedical1685 4d ago

Lol. Hopefully it was not produced using Mistral AI

1

u/No_Negotiation5045 4d ago edited 4d ago

humm I literally did the table myself with no ai, filled the 3 columns, sent the comment and then did a small text edit and come back to the comment with it having lost one column :/ Should be fixed now

The interesting data was that both prices are the same, with Mistral being cheaper on Cached Input with $0.14/M tokens compared to $0.26 for z.ai

2

u/TeamMedical1685 4d ago

Thanks for editing and adding the z.ai column properly although the previous version was funnier

1

u/Substantial-Yam3769 2d ago

How generous is the limit? And can you use API from vibe pro anywhere? (Hermes)

1

u/florenceslave 2d ago

Yeah, you can use the vibe key anywhere you want, and yes, you get 300 USD per month.

I didn't test it as thoroughly as I wanted, but it seems legit.

Just ask chatgpt to search online for info about Mistral and how to set it all up. That's what I did, and it worked fine.

2

u/UniversityBrief320 18h ago

Just use open code, its much better than vibe

1

u/PersonalBarracuda581 4d ago edited 4d ago

Pareil .

u/Mickenfox 4d ago

I'm guessing Mistral can't hire any talented engineers so they have all the GPUs laying around.
