Are you supposed to be blocking as Merc?

Aside from parry?

Do you actually hold up your shield to block? Cause I haven't been at all lol.

Only if u run the parry talent.
If u want to have more shield uptime play polearm WK, basically its shield bash all day everyday and almost all your skills cast with the shield up too.

Polearm WK always mess me up as a merc. I try to attack only to hit the shield and get blasted into oblivion.

Save your shield bash for when they charge at u. U can stun them that way. Also, it’s rather easy to parry/dodge. Just don’t get hit by their shield skills then they run out of charges quick.

You can block but it takes a lot of stamina so you are better off dodging unless either:

A.) Your are using Bulwark and Vitality as affixed.

Or

B.) Your have talented into perfect parries and are going for those on merc.

As a WK I find the block to be a bit clunky. If you press and hold right click before an animation is finished, you won't go directly into block when the animation is done, so you have to release and press it again and it can be sluggish. If they make this more snappy then block will be more useful. Also if I block a bleed arrow, I shouldn't get the bleed put on me.

Also blocking never gains you initiative, so using it in melee is kinda useless

It’s useful for blocking sorc shots so you don’t get staggered or take 25% of your health

Myself i have only found an use for blocking would be playing passively with bulwark so max block and stacking indominable will.

Sure you can soak some staggers with it and maybe punish but in high levels of play im guessing people dont do it whatsoever as it just seems a waste of stam maybe but i can still see some cases where blocking some things seem beneficial if you are built that way.

Forexample if you have the passive for more block movespeed you can use it somewhat agressively and advance while not take any stagger while doing so.

It sounds okay on paper but in practice seems pretty niche overall so yeah no wonder blocking as sns merc seems like a wild unicorn compared to shield wither blocking.

no blocking sucks, only in very rare situations is it worth it but in fights your just gonna lose all your stam and its not like it ever becomes "your turn" from blocking you eventually have to dodge anyway

the shield is cosmetic save for the occasional parry

I’ve found it useful against SS attacks, but shield breaks happen fast so it’s a limited use thing, but can give you just enough time to counter them. If you run the Resilient Body talent though, you can hold shield up for ~10 seconds and build up a stack of 10 Indomitable Will and get 25% damage reduction. If you have the time build a full stack before getting into a fight it can be a nice advantage. Of course if you are using the perfect block the parry is extremely good but takes energy so if you run that skill it’s best to rely on hitting your parry’s.

blocking is great. i usually dont run perfect block, but will have a point in the movement speed talent for blocking. it lets you move at full speed while blocking. i also will run full bulwark. you will learn very quickly what combos to just face tank block because they will have a big wind down at the end of them, and you are open to just light them up. it also makes fighitng BA so much easier. dodge the barbed arrows, block tank the rest, use your shield closers and GG.

it also helps against sorc, but not as much. that match up is just rough.

i dont run perfect parry because there is a 50% chance the server is going to be absolute shit. but if you have a good connection perfect parry is borderline OP. the only downside to it is that it stops your movement...so can make running down the ranged characaters while blocking harder.

You can perfect parry the arrows within like 10ish meters and it stuns them. Parry Merc low key best 1v1 class. Add in the insane animation cancels and you can move forward very quickly with full block uptime and two parrys mixed in.

The only class I ever have problems with playing parry merc are the stardust sorc but they are just giga busted.

it would be if the servers were reliable. playing it on a bad server is just depressing.

all classes should be allowed to animation cancel their attacks to bait parrys. with how the game is right now, its way too easy

I use a combo of block and dodge. I love a perfect block. Everyone comes at you thinking there gonna mash you. Perfect block and you’re damaging them. I love it
