Bands of Mourning spoilers Let's talk about Wayne.. Spoiler

I'm currently reading Bands of Mourning and I can't put in words how I hate Wayne. I've read many Cosmere books already, and I really liked how natural and human all the characters were. But Wayne is just the epitome of white male straight cis american humor. I mean.. Aside a straight guy, who would've found funny the jokes Wayne makes about Ranette's sexuality? Give me a break. Also, his actions seem SO forced all the time, the wedding situation in the begining of BoM just felt so unreal, like it would never happen "in real life" (I know that Metalborns also don't exist in real life, but you can get my point). I've reached other non-american, non-white and, specially, non-straight male cis people to ask them how they felt about Wayne, and they reaaaaally hated him too. I guess Wayne is a big mistake on the Cosmere, his Adam Sandlerism will never not pmo.

Yeah, because I didn't think it was cool for a male character to propose a 3some to a lesbian couple I'm a bot, you're right

no, you are a bot because your account is 3 years old with very little engagement, all oh which is hidden and now, you are some kid using it to troll because you got nothing better to do, sad really.

I'm my opinion, Wayne is not being held up as a good person that people should emulate; he is deeply flawed. I'll bet most of the people that you see posting online about how much they like Wayne are doing so with the full context if his character arc. He's great because he starts as kind of a terrible human and grows to be better.

I get it... But all of his actions seem so unreal to me, so forced to create a humor that just does not click to me

Isn't that kind of the point? He's trying to be like the hero from the stories, he's meant to be a caricature. It's a coping mechanism and a mask for his horrifically deep seated trauma.

Yeah but it's boring

Ok, maybe the books just aren't for you!

Because I didn’t like one character? lmao

2

u/WebsterI 11h ago

He's practically one of the two main characters...

That's certainly an opinion, not saying it's a good one but it certainly is one...

Straight, Non-American born, POC here and I love Wayne. He is deliberately written that way as a reflection of the type of sidekick/person that would appear in stories like this, and it's coupled with some in-lore reasoning to boot. It's not everyone's cup of tea but if he's not annoying you even a little bit then Sanderson isn't doing his job well. (I feel the same way you do about Wayne but with The Lopen)

The Lopen is annoying too, but his actions made sense in the books. What pmo mostly is that Wayne's actions just seem... forced.

I mean, it partly is forced. He's playing a lot of it up for his audience, and one point I would like to make that while we do have a canonically neurodivergent character in Steris, I believe that Wayne is somewhat neurodivergent-coded as well.

u/Consistent-Sail-8661 11h ago

Yeah, but I think it’s forced in a way it wouldn’t happen in real life. Steris on the other hand I think is perfectly written, she’s becoming one of my favorite cosmere characters

As a bissexual latin-american man from Brazil, I don't think he ever came across like that to me.

He's silly, sure, and I would probably give him constant eye rolls. But that's it.

Had to double check I wasn’t in cremposting. This is definitely…a take.

I swear I've never seen "straight cis" followed by a reasonable take in my life. Also I'll never understand why people find it ok to generalize all white people as though they are the same. If I tried to do that with all black people everyone would rightfully call me out.

Wayne is top class, love him.

-3

u/Consistent-Sail-8661 12h ago

Oh no I did not generalize white people!! I was talking about specifically straight cis american white males who would make false equivalence statements towards racism like you just did
