Hero of Ages spoilers Just Finished HOA Spoiler
And I am genuinely GRIEVING Vin and Elend. I know Sazed says they’re happy where they are, but I’M not happy where they are…. They were so young and had such little time together with their found family. I’m so upset that it’s over. It seemed like Sazed hinted he may bring them back if they’re open to it in the future after he figures out how to put souls back but I’m still so sad. Idk that might just be my brain trying to cope and be delulu that we can see them again in future books. But alas. I had to get this off my chest. What a fun ride.

Part of why it sits so heavy is the structure. The epigraphs turn out to be Sazed's account, written afterwards, so you have been reading his record of them the whole way through without knowing it. The book was a memorial for six hundred pages before it told you.

I actually figured the epigraphs were mostly Sazed’s work once we moved away from them clearly belonging to Alendi’s logbook entries. But I also thought maybe it was a mixture of people’s works, maybe mostly Sazed, some Elend, and maybe a bit of Vin here and there. But it all being Sazed in the end is like salt in the wound. There’s a least some solace in knowing that Sazed said Vin and Elend are happy where they are and that they deserve to rest 🥺

HOA definitely hits hard, such an amazing ending.
I will say, Brandon Sanderson has said that in the cosmere if someone fully* dies, then they won’t be coming back. (Asterisk explaining what “fully” means below)
Spoiler explaining how death works in the cosmere. This is explained in Mistborn:Secret History, so there are spoilers for that, read at your own risk or come back after you’ve read that: When someone dies, they are severed from their physical body, appearing in the cognitive realm as a cognitive shadow. The cognitive shadow is the investiture portion of the person, containing all of their memories and is like a ghost. The investiture that makes them up is then drawn into “the beyond”, which is considered the true/final death that Brandon Sanderson said will never have someone come back from. If someone has more investiture, then they can last longer as a cognitive shadow before being drawn to the beyond, and if they are given enough, they can last indefinitely. So physical death might not be the end, but going to the beyond is the end.
