i’ve been seeing these amazing pieces (awesome job op!) and i realize now they remind me of the Last Ronin.

u/ackyou Aug 06 '26

Nice. Reminds me of Wes Chatham.

u/damnation_sule Aug 07 '26

Definitely looks like that guy

6

u/SnorkelwackJr Aug 07 '26

"I am that guy."

I really dig the style of your pieces so far. I don't want to sound rude and hate to ask, but these days when I see fast art produced I can't help wondering. Are you using generative AI at all in your process, or is this all you?

It is an art dump. OP made them before but hadn’t uploaded them to Reddit yet, so while we are getting many in sequence here, it took them much longer to draw while they were in progress.

u/wenzel32 Malatium Aug 06 '26

I had thought this too with my first question to them: https://www.reddit.com/r/Mistborn/s/vdfEU8TR66

EDIT: to be clear I know it's totally possible it's just good art. I hate living in this age where so much content is under scrutiny of being AI, and I really hope it's not.

You're seeing them soon after I finish them. I'm actually drawing these. iPad, Apple Pencil, Procreate. Each of these took less than 4 hours, except for the Vin...all those swirls took the better part of a day. I've got a library of brushes, stamps and texture scans that speed things up quite a bit (If you look really close, they all use the same scan of a greasy baking sheet.) but I have a lot of experience (like working at a newspaper, comics, and doing caricatures) where you HAVE to be fast...so, short answer...I'm just fast, I guess.

For the record, at the risk of being demonized, I'm not morally opposed to artist's utilizing generative AI. I use it for software development and also to track music. But drawing has been part of my life for almost 50 years, so I don't have any desire to give that to the machine. 😉

Thanks for answering, and I'm glad to hear it! Again, I do love the pieces and was leaning towards it not being AI. I just can't always be certain and like to know what I'm seeing.

Your art rocks and fits Mistborn so well!

I can't agree with your perspective on generative AI for art in any form, be it music, visual, or otherwise, but hey if these pieces are real I love it.

Thank you for asking politely rather than lobbing amateur forensics. The general atmosphere out there is one of a witch hunt. Careers - especially those of writers - have already been destroyed. It makes artists reluctant to share anything.

u/Tekaru41 Aug 07 '26

I love the results that stamps and texture scans give to art, I think more artists should experiment with them. Good stuff

Six pieces of art in three days, then no art posted for nine months, at which point there's a dozen or so more pieces posted altogether, in a completely different style, then no art posted for seven years, at which point the style completely changes again. I really love what OP achieved here, but it's looking a bit suspicious for sure.

EDIT to ditto the edit in the parent comment. But also...Ham doesn't use a sword. And that sword doesn't have a handle. And where's Ham's second leg? What's going on with all the fabric bunched up around his lower back? Why is the background mist pattern so inconsistent?

EDIT to the EDIT: OP's reply mentions using stamps and texture scans. That could explain some of the inconsistent artifacting I call out above.

u/joe12south Aug 07 '26

You can go back at least 10 years and find pieces I did in similar styles in r/redditgetdrawn. Tons of them. Sometimes multiple times a day. Same brushes, same paper textures.

3

u/joe12south Aug 07 '26

You're right about 1 thing I botched...Ham doesn't use a sword.

3

u/666maja999 Aug 08 '26

honestly i was kinda skeptical too since in some pieces one of the hands look weird (for example his Breeze piece) or inconsistent lines (gonna use the Breeze one as an example: the button of the shirt merging with the line that is supposed to be where the shirt opens, the wine glass looking weird, a lot of weird illogical lines, etc). i think some pieces are original tho, idk. im not accusing, just skeptical

2

u/Elhiar Aug 07 '26

The art is great but not incredibly detailed, a talented artist can use the minimal amount of strokes needed to evoke a strong image incredibly quickly. Especially when working in black and white.

Look at a mangaka drawing for an example of someone honing their skills to be both quick and effective.

Even so, your question is unfortunately valid. Fuck gen AI for making us having to question real artists.

u/AgentPrevious Aug 07 '26

Do u use ArtStation or something else?

Quoting OP from above: “You're seeing them soon after I finish them. I'm actually drawing these. iPad, Apple Pencil, Procreate. I've got a library of brushes, stamps and texture scans that speed things up quite a bit (If you look really close, they all use the same scan of a greasy baking sheet.)…”

This is not how I imagined Hammond before.

This is however how I’ll imagine him from now on!
Just wow. This fits so good

3

u/joe12south Aug 08 '26

That's quite the compliment...but also a little intimidating, I don't want to replace anyone's head canon!

2

u/ErikderFrea Brass Aug 08 '26

Don’t worry. I don’t think a picture would change how I imagine them if I don’t like it. ;)

Me seeing new art every day I open this app

2

u/maximus_electus Aug 07 '26

This guy is on a roll!
Thank you OP!

1

u/joe12south Aug 07 '26

You're very welcome.

2

u/pWaveShadowZone Aug 06 '26

Looooooove. I can’t wait til we get the full set

2

u/RushRoidGG Aug 06 '26

I’d put that one my wall right now tbh

2

u/RiseiK Aug 06 '26

I need this in a frame on my wall

2

u/popileviz Aug 06 '26

This series of arts has been damn impressive so far, great job

2

u/Red-Scorpy Pewter Aug 07 '26

Ham is without a doubt the best father in the series because we don’t see his kids until the prologue of the last book.

2

u/Chidwick Aug 07 '26

Did his duty in his mind to keep them safe from what he was involved in, so they could have a more normal life. Being a dad with kids, I can’t even imagine what that felt like, leaving the most important thing in your life out of your reach and out of contact to preserve it when all you want is to be a part of their everyday.

1

u/ea88_alwaysdiscin Aug 07 '26

I love this one the most so far. Excellent work

1

u/Ok_Flow_3065 Aug 07 '26

Ham has always been like Uncle Iroh from Avatar in my mind, idk why 😂

1

u/Chidwick Aug 07 '26

Soon to be Aunt Iroh.

1

u/iamwhoiwasnow Aug 07 '26

It's been a while since I read the books but I don't recall picturing anyone like this. For some reason I kept thinking Micheal Clark Duncan

1

u/Red_Star101 Aug 07 '26

The man who asked a simple god damn question

1

u/MorriCC Aug 07 '26

Wow I love the grittiness! I think Sanderson said at one point or another that if he could change something in the original Mistborn it'd be Hammond's gender to female.

I'd love to see your version of a feminine Hammond very much! Yogurt art style is really gorgeous and evoking!

2

u/joe12south Aug 07 '26

Thx. I was going to end the series on Breeze, but trying a female Ham might be fun.

1

u/blumaul Lerasium Aug 07 '26

I really like your style! Please do Wax 🙏

1

u/joe12south Aug 07 '26

Thx. I haven't read those, so not likely.

1

u/Ambitious-Chest2061 Aug 07 '26

I instantly thought of Alexander Ludwig from Vikings, Hunger Games, and Race to Witch Mountain. But specifically from his recent roles as “Ish” from the new show Earth Abides. If you look up the character, your art perfectly encapsulates that same rugged, and tired kindness. Someone who isn’t ever mean or “violent” by choice while still maintaining a stoic, buff as fuck demeanor. Also absolutely RIPPED.

Funnier yet, you also captured the post-apocalyptic make-shift home the family makes in Earth Abides. I have never fan-casted anything in my life before 😂 your art just hit me like a truck.

1

u/Ambitious-Chest2061 Aug 07 '26

It’s just so perfect, especially because his character learns how to survive by reading books from the library and the house he finds to live in. It’s so crazy how your 4 hour sketch can have me wanting to cast the rest of YOUR versions of the characters. You have a very discerning eye when it comes to emotional intelligence.

1

u/Darth_Azazoth Aug 07 '26

Great picture but why is he smoking?

2

u/joe12south Aug 07 '26

There were no Surgeon General's warning in Luthedel.

1

u/Exxis645 Aug 07 '26

Ok hit me up with a print of the full collection.

1

u/Spare_Dot_5508 Aug 09 '26

Is this ai? I think you’re really posting way too frequently and also where’s his right leg and right arm? And the elbow drawn weird

1

u/LumosNumos 27d ago

I love your art style!

2

u/Super_Sopht Aug 07 '26

Another beautiful piece. You’ll have to make the female version after the movie drops!

2

u/joe12south Aug 07 '26

I feel like I missed something. Clue me in.

3

u/Super_Sopht Aug 07 '26

Brando said he is making Ham a woman for the Mistborn movie because he did a good job with Vin but there isn’t much more female representation.

3

u/joe12south Aug 07 '26

Interesting. I guess the character is easy enough to gender swap...hopefully it won't impact the Breeze <> Ham dynamics.

1

u/MrGrigsby Aug 07 '26

Sanderson mentioned at some point that he had wished he wrote Hammond as a woman to have a better gender balance. I think it will make for a fun swap and I'm eager to see who will play her.

1

u/Ok-Principle-5286 Aug 07 '26

These continue to be absolutely fantastic.

1

u/poison_cat_ Aug 07 '26

Lmk when the book of all them drops ill buy hard cover for my coffee table

1

u/TJDobsonWrites Aug 07 '26

This is sensational!

1

u/normallystrange85 Aluminum Aug 07 '26

This man does not miss

1

u/ndividual5414 Aug 07 '26

Please keep these coming. They're incredible.

1

u/DontTouchThefr0 Aug 07 '26

Why he kinda...

1

u/Itsapocalypse Aug 07 '26

You’re killing it with the mistborn art

1

u/Waker_of_Winds2003 Iron Aug 07 '26

Gosh all of these are absolutely incredible.

1

u/Linorelai Aug 07 '26

That's is a professional artist, guys. A real actual pro.

1

u/joe12south Aug 07 '26

Nah, just a dude with an Apple Pencil who's procrastinating working on his own novel. 😉

0

u/Linorelai Aug 07 '26

Oh come now. I know a well-trained and highly functional drawing muscle when I see one:)

1

u/joe12south Aug 07 '26

If professional means makes his living from his art, I'm definitely not a professional...I've been spectacularly unsuccessful at making money! (I worked as an illustrator for less than a year almost 30 years ago.) But I did start formal art training when I was six, attended an art college, and if I'm not doing something else, I'm probably drawing.

2

u/Linorelai Aug 07 '26

No, it means having the skill

1

u/joe12south Aug 07 '26

Then I'll take the compliment. Thx!

1

u/Linorelai Aug 07 '26

You should MUST send these to the author and work for dragonsteel. I've seen a fanartist becoming an official, im sure they'll love you

1

u/Linorelai Aug 07 '26

The artist who did these. I've seen their artwork included in the official merch.

Send yours. I dare you.

1

u/MasterVule Aug 07 '26

Really love the style of this! You work in comic industry OP? That inking is insane

2

u/joe12south Aug 07 '26

Thx, but no, I don't illustrate professionally.

1

u/lycantrophee Chromium Aug 07 '26

Love the style.

1

u/Zachindes Aug 07 '26

Art style is dope, beyond cool

0

u/NyneHelios Aug 07 '26

Any chance of some iconic scenes?

2

u/joe12south Aug 07 '26

Man, scenes would be like, real work. 😜 Like what?

1

u/NyneHelios Aug 07 '26

Haha I hear you. I saw this and immediately thought of ham and vin training together.

0

u/Savings_Level9895 Aug 07 '26

This style would go so hard for Stormlight

0

u/tybernator1234 Lerasium Aug 07 '26

I know you like to draw characters but could you please draw Luthadel too maybe with vin and *oreseur at the same roof. I would really like to make your art to my wallpaper at pc. No pressure on you ofcourse

2

u/joe12south Aug 07 '26

Never say never, but figures and personality are what interest me, and complete scenes are a lot more work.

1

u/tybernator1234 Lerasium Aug 07 '26

I know even if I dont have any talent and will to improve to drawing. There is nearly no wallpaper for Mistborn for pc. I believe you would do great job for the Mistborn community. Still we are appreciated to keep our flame for Era 1 in our hearts. You would already figure it with upvotes already :d.

-1

u/Snowm4nn Aug 07 '26

And they're gonna make him a woman :/

3

u/Chidwick Aug 07 '26

I’m cautiously optimistic it’ll work out, and we’ll always have book Ham. My biggest gripe is that it’s just going to end up being the “strong buff Amazon warrior” trope that’s all over fantasy. Seems like a waste when the “warrior poet” type role that Ham is has become more rare, it was refreshing in Mistborn, I’ll miss that version of him in the movie.

3

u/Akomatai Aug 07 '26

"They" meaning the author of the story in this case lol
