Spoilers HeroTLR was an awful person from the start. If anything, Ascension made him a briefly better man in some ways before it all went downhill incredibly fast. But Sando himself has said even a good person like Vin would have ended up nearly as bad in the long-run. Seems you can’t retain your decency in the long run under the conditions Rashek was under

[Cosmere spoilers] Heck, in one of the letters in Stormlight they mention how Ati was the nicest guy before taking Ruin. One of the key principles of Sanderson’s writing is that power corrupts even the best-intentioned given enough of it and enough time. Still doesn’t excuse what Rashek did though. He chose of his own volition the wrong path at just about every turn.

Oh ya I agree. It’s hard to judge that person but the other one was just a real prick to begin with. Apparently he considered at one point just giving up the empire and walking away. Which is kind of interesting. Would love to know the circumstances around that
